Spherical Panorama: Powerhouse
Posted By: HaLo2FrEeEk <halo2freeek@gmail.com>Date: 5/18/10 7:05 p.m.

Man, I'm cranking these out like an assembly line. I actually finished this one yesterday morning, but I decided tohold off on the actual release to give you time to spend with the Boneyard panorama, because I'm all nice like that.

It's all panoramical-like!

This one initially gave me a lot of trouble. I thought I'd done everything right, but my stitch just wasn't coming out right. No matter how many control points I placed they always ended up in the wrong place, and even manually editing them wasn't giving me the results I needed. Eventually I discovered that I had accidentally moved the camera slightly while taking the screenshots and that caused the perspective of the shot to change. See, to make one of these, all of the pictures have to be taken from the exact same position, you just rotate the camera around to see everything. Since the camera had been moved, it was impossible to match the images up.

Once I figured out my folly, I deleted the screenshots I had (which was difficult for me to do, I hate deleting things) and started over. What's funny is that the accuracy of control points is measured in error pixels, that's the number of pixels between control points in overlapping images. Mostly I'll settle for a maximum error of no more than 30-40, but almost without any modification (usually I have to manually move a lot of control points around, to fine tune things) I ended up with an error of less than 10! None of the other screenshots had that low an error. I thought it was fitting seeing as I had to go back and retake all the screenshots.

Another interesting fact, this panorama uses the least amount of screenshots of all of the ones I've done. Just 112 total. Again, funny...to me.

Anywho, I don't wanna keep you guys from your hard-earned (...) screensaver:

And, of course, the larger version of the Little World image from above:

Up next...Overlook. YEY!

Oh, and if I have time I'd like to go back and do a few more on each of the maps, from other locations. If I did that I could link them together using Hotspots in the Panorama viewer. You click the hotspot, and you're warped, Shaw Fujikawa-style, to another location...on the same map.

And finally, who says I should be the one making all the decisions like where the panorama is taken and on what map? (I do.) I'm going to be writing up a nice little tutorial, and by writing up I mean it'll probably be a video tutorial, showing you exactly how, start to finish, I create a Spherical Panorama! I will most likely do this after the Reach Beta has ended, not because I want to have a monopoly on Reach Beta Spherical Panoramas (I do,)but because I need all the time I have left to make more panoramas (and play more Reach!) See how I'm always thinking of you!
