Trying to be optimist (FoR)

I just finnished reading FoR for the 2.5 time, and I kept thinking *how* the spartans on Reach could have survived. I know, the chances are slim, but as I said, I'm trying to be optimist. And, I don't presently have the book with me, so forgive me if I don't quote anything.

A) The Spartans hid in the mines they trained in.

It would work because: Maybe the mines could be deep enough to protect them from the glassing of the planet. The mines could also be full of storage with dryed food, weapons, and heavy digging machinery.

It wouldn't work because: The glassing would maybe melt the whole surface of the planet, efectively giving them a nice, crushing, lava bath. Even if the mines where deep enough, the glassed planets no longer have atmosphere.

B) The Spartans never made it into orbit... by any human means. But they could have stolen a Covenant dropship.

It would work because: It means they would have reached orbit undetected by UNSC. From there, I don't know... Bord a Covenant vessel maybe?

It wouldn't work because: Maybe they don't know how to pilot Covenant dropship? (Still, the MC is capable of piloting a banshee.) But once in space, they situation wouldn't be too good since both Covenant and UNSC ships would be hostile to them.

These are the only two ways I can see they could have survived. Maybe you guys have thought of something else?
