Firefight Solo Guide: Security Zone
Posted By: Monochron <Fleebop101@gmail.com>Date: 12/3/09 2:04 p.m.

Security Zone boys! This time I'll be changing the formula slightly. Cutting the fat if you will and sticking to the most applicable topics. Pop in your disk and dive into some firefight alone to test your metal. Hope you like it.

Security Zone

Security Zone is surprisingly challenging alone. A big point of frustration is the contrasting lighting where the bright sun can make objects right in front of you seem shadowed and hidden. This makes distance kills difficult and transitioning from darkness to light very jarring. The large cover objects seem more apt for vehicles to use but by utilizing the few smaller ones you can mount a more effective defense. The top of the stairs area is too open for holding and the stairs themselves give the enemy the high ground and end up being a grenade trap so the best place for making your stand is one of the small nooks up on either side of those stairs. Your only cover is two planters in front of you but the distance away from enemies you will be allows you to take out quite a few at a distance. Your enemies will be coming up the large slope obviously but you should also keep in mind that the phantoms dropping them off do not stop in one place but rather fly over and drop them at intervals. This makes it very hard to predict where you'll be receiving fire from and creates a lot of downtime as enemies have to make their way up the big hill.

There's no an explosion, that's just the sky behind him...

Quick Tips

  • Weapons seem to disappear more rapidly on Security Zone than on other maps so think about holding power weapons through wave transitions as well as juggling them. Hoard Carbines and Fuel Rods and make it a routine to pick them up as much as possible.
  • Killing the Wraith is totally optional as he won't shoot you if you don't run out and see him. This means you've got plenty of Laser so feel free to fry some larger enemies if the need arises.
  • Invisible Brutes love to bust up your nook all sneaky like but because of the odd lighting here the VISR can actually help to reveal them. The sky will be a blazing white but the ground area will just be bright, making those trying to be sneaky easier to spot.

Weapons

Pistol and SMG are right of front of either hallway at the foot of the stairs and Rockets are in between them behind the wall. Run out and you can easily jump down to them from the nook without taking any damage. Heath is also down here in front of the Pistol/SMG ammo. Laser is further out on the map on the left most...large platform...flange thing on one of the benches and the Sniper is on the bench on the right most large platform/flange. The Turrets is on the two left and right flange things and while the only effective way to use it is to rip it off and stash it in your nook, it will very likely disappear and would only be worth it to save you ammo. Use it in early rounds to conserve bullets for later.

Bonus: you get to look like a badass doing it

Brutes

Combo kills are your friend and assassinations your lover. Don't be afraid to jump down to the bottom of the stairs if things get too hairy (geddit....Brutes....) but be carefully making your way back because those stairs are treacherous. If they berserk their way into your nook you can ignore them for a bit while you strafe around and take care of enemies firing at you. They may often stop and stand next to the planters making themselves good grenade fodder. Just keep your distance so they don't charge.

General Tips

  • It is easier to stick Brutes when they get up to the planter as they tend to stop next to it.
  • PP as many Brutes as you can to stop them shooting at you and the ones you don't finish off with headshots you can assassinate when they charge you.

Try to hit them though

Grunts/Jackals

At the beginning of a wave take these guys out as they come up the slope and fall back when they reach the top. Do your best to be aware of what is around you though because the light can make it very difficult to notice Grunts and Jackals flanking you and they will come up from all sides due to how they are dropped off by the phantom. When catch is on you will very often need to come out in front of the nook and dodge in a circle to avoid grenades.

General Tips

  • Carbine and Pistol are best for the headshots.
  • Fire slightly to the left when Grunts are in mid-grenade throw to get the headshot.
  • Jump and melee down to get over jackals shields during Blackeye.

Gleaming in the sunlight

Drones

Drones....they may be the most dangerous enemy here. There is no good way to kill Drones on Security Zone but the most reliable way is to fall back to the spawn hallway and camp down there. They will pepper you with laser accurate fire and the complete lack of cover in the upper area will leave you dead or shieldless very quickly. The frustrating thing about using the bottom stair area is that the Drones will often hover behind cover nailing you with plasma or pop over to shoot you and immediately fly out of sight causing you to waste ammo and not kill anything. Frankly you just have to wait it out or risk running out into the open. Once Blackeye is on it becomes very difficult. Very little chance of melee and being in the open really isn't an option. Take your time and conserve your health packs because picking one up by accident can mean a swift death.

General Tips

  • SMG is great and use Plasma Rifle or Plasma Pistol on the shielded ones when Iron is on.
  • Get melees if you can but it is usually not worth it to run out for one.
  • When using the SMG try zooming in even if the bugs aren't far away. It is more accurate zoomed and taking one down a bit sooner can make a lot of difference.

Hunters/Chieftains

Hunters are more easily dealt with here than on other levels. If you save a shot or two in your Spartan Laser (and you should) they can be easily lit up. If you don't want to use Laser use whatever other power weapons you are comfortable with parting with. You have plenty of room though if you take them on in front of the nook so dodging shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't end up down the stairs. Chieftains should be dealt with in much the same way but it is better to bring them back into the nook with you. The length of time you have to spend with Chieftains and the threat from other Brutes make the small amount of cover the nook gives invaluable. Dodging isn't much of a challenge in the nook but try not to bump into the trees and get hammered. Hhm, that usually goes the other way around. Fuel Rod Chieftains will get pretty close to you again so you can go for the assassination if the opportunity presents.

General Tips

  • If circling a Hunter to kill it, circle to the left as they have slightly less reach in that direction.
  • Snipers are great for blasting apart a Hunter's squirming orange filling and Fuel Rod or Rockets work great too. If nothing else toss as many grenades as you can on their back or head.
  • Good ways to take out Hammer Chieftain are to jump over them or sidestep as they lunge. Try yelling toro while you do it. You can go for the assassination If you sidestep but if you miss you are very likely dead. Carbine takes off their helmet relatively quickly and lets you get a headshot if you don't want to use up your power weapons or if they have mysteriously vanished...
  • Strafe perpendicular to Fuel Rod Chieftains as you close in for an assassination and dodge left around their melees to their supple back.

Wraiths

You can board the Wraith in Security Zone but it is not a great strategy for long term solo play. To do this, bring a carbine and Plasma Pistol, kill the turret gunner, and stand on top of the wraith. Break open the driver door and take down his shield then crouch behind him so the "Hold Rb to board Wraith" text is NOT showing. Hold the Rb button while you shoot him in the head with the carbine and you should pop right in. You will likely want to shoot the Wraith with an overcharged shot while on top so that you can better orient yourself in the right position. Once you are inside, a big problem will be Drones. You wouldn't think oversized flies would be a threat to a tank but these ass hats will always find a way. If you can hit one with the mortar at a distance it can sometimes take out the surrounding ones but if they get close and board you rush up to a wall and fire at the wall to knock them off. As the rounds wear on this will be more and more difficult and remember that you will have no way to recharge your shield once Blackeye is on because the Wraith will explode when you step outside of it.

Blackeye Round

When this unforgiving skull turns on be prepared to give your left thumb a workout. Crouching behind the planters at the front of the nook gives you plenty of chances for a melee but it also leaves you prone to grenade spam. When you don't see too many grunts around cop a squat and wait for some unsuspecting badie to waddle around the corner and give you some brand new shield. When the buggers come calling the only real way to stay alive is to jump down to the bottom stair area. You will have to wait it out and take a good bit of damage down there but if you manage your health packs well and hang onto good ammo you should be able to make it through.

General Tips

  • Keep a hammer. Any hit is considered a melee and will recharge your shields.
  • PP Overcharge as many Brutes as you can to make them charge. Dodging punches is easier than dodging bullets. Ask Neo.

Bonus Round

The Bonus Round on Security Zone is very straight forward. A phantom comes down in front of the center platform/flange and unloads buckets of Grunts for you to pop like high school era zits. The phantom hovers over another smaller platform and will often drop piles of Grunts onto it allowing you plenty of multikills with well placed Fuel Rod or Rocket Launcher shots. You would do best to carry a pistol, or carbine if you don't have one, and another heavy weapon for use on the grouped up little guys.

General Tips

  • Cap as many headshots as you can as Grunts tend to line up in a row then blast any groups with heavy weapons.
  • Start up high for a good line of sight then fall back while dodging grenades.
  • Die or kill yourself at the end of the round so you respawn with full ammo retain the same amount of lives.

They always show up right before prom

One more thing to watch out for is love on the battle field. The covenant throw inhibition to the wind in the heat of battle and even interspecies snuggling blossoms on this bright and dangerous day. The last thing you want is to be caught up in that.

Jungle Fever

If you have made it this far, thanks! Feel free to leave some comments or berate me for making a suckzorz guide. Preferably the first though.
