In Response To: Thoughts on Palace Hotel (gunluva)

This is probably just me, but I like how McLees reinforced the connection between New Mombasa and the modern-day version. Of course, he's the one that designed the transit map of the city in Terminal, so I guess he has a knack for it.

The story mentions several specific places:

Mwatate Street Transit Center - a routing area for "taxis, buses, private vehicles." There's also a real Mwatate Street in today's city.

Beria Plaza - a funnel-shaped courtyard, likely named after real-life Beira Street.

Kilindini Park Cultural Center - described as being underneath an "enormous amphitheater", this is probably the domed park you fight through in Metropolis.

Mtangwe Route/Underpass - "a 390m tunnel that resurfaced in the center of New Mombasa's industrial zone." Given that Mtongwe is located near where the suspension bridge intersects Old Mombasa, the route is likely the whole stretch of highway, while the "underpass" is the tunnel the highway goes into under New Mombasa.

Shimanzi Road - "the broad divided highway that split the industrial district in two." Another real-life road, and the one you first exit onto when you leave the domed park.

Since these are all based on real locations, we can plot them on a map, and they all happen to be in the same area that Halo 2 is said to take place:

I also thought it was funny how part of the story explained away the symmetrical nature of the city in ODST:

Even though the architects and city planners had tried their best to hide it, most people could tell at a glance that New Mombasa was a gigantic jigsaw puzzle of a city -- rigorously sectioned off into recognizable, repeating parcels. It was a grim necessity for every tether city. If the unthinkable were to happen -- well, another unthinkable, as at least one unthinkable thing was already happening -- and catastrophe were to befall the Mombasa Tether, the expectation was that this compartmentalization of the city would keep the death toll and property damage to a minimum.

It doesn't make a lot of sense, but there you go.
