Halo Evolutions | |

Just finished up Evolutions and I have to say I was highly, highly impressed with the book. I think it is now my favorite piece of Halo fiction. I thought all of the stories were excellent with Midnight In The Heart Of Midlothian by Frankie, and The Impossible Life And The Possible Death of Preston J. Cole being my favorite two stories. The joke the AI played on the Covenant at the end of Frankie's story have me screaming with laughter, and tactics Admiral Cole used in his final battle with the Covenant were so awesome they made the Keyes Loop look like the fumbling of an infant. I also really enjoyed the happenings in The Mona Lisa, as much for the long slow build up as anything else. And Cortana's fight against the Gravemind in Human Weakness was epic and shocking and depressing in a way I never guessed it would be. I was also surprised at how refreshing and almost soothing Robt McLees' story Palace Hotel was to me. Maybe it was because it was right after The Mona Lisa but I couldn't help but smile as the Chief did his normal soldering while Cortana did her normal AIing as they made their way towards Regret's carrier. The only story I didn't like as much was Tobias S. Buckell's Dirt. The story itself was fine. It spanned pretty much the entire Covenant War and was actually pretty good, I just felt it was a bit long and that in "reality" the young ODST would have never listened to what must have been a two hour tale, no matter how well the dying soldier might have been telling it. I've already seen at least one person say they liked it best, so maybe it was just me. I give this book a 7 out of 7. It was just that good. You should all go buy it right now.
