In Response To: Reach Spike Premiere (ZaneZavin) This has been a fun read and I enjoy hearing people fighting a fight on behalf of Bungie, looking out for our well-being and trying to unravel conspiracies aligned against us. We're doing ok though, don't worry. Let me just add a few closing thoughts to put a few of you at ease... 1. Reach (and ODST) are very much games Bungie wanted to make. I can assure you that the hearts of Bungie are very much poured into Reach, like all games before it. Reach offers a lot of creative opportunities and a fresh approach to a universe we are all still very fond of. We hope you'll share our excitement as you start to learn and see more. 2. Did you know that today the majority of people who work at Bungie have only shipped one, or zero, Halo games? (We had approx. 60 full time employees at the end of Halo 2, today we're upwards of 130). While some people have been working on Halo for a decade (many of whom make up the core of the Reach team) many more were inspired to come work for Bungie because of Halo and their desire to participate in the Universe. 3. We still have a portion of our team hard at work on brand new hotness that's set in a brand new universe. Our focus is obviously on Reach right now but when the time is right, we'll be eager to pull back the curtain. 4. Showing Reach at the VGAs was something Bungie and MGS wanted to do. We're not paying Spike to be included, they're not paying anyone to include Reach. It's a case of a mutually beneficial opportunity to debut the game in a large scale (global) way that is far more economical than a slick outsourced CG spot airing during a football game. Really it's a win-win for a lot of reasons and it's a great opportunity for us to kickoff the Reach train. 5. It's in our interest to produce trailers, vidocs and the like as they are a crucial component of making our games successful at retail. This all part of doing business as a game developer. Sometimes stuff is outsourced (like the CG in the ODST announce, for example) and that incurs extra costs to the parties involved but nobody is getting cheated or ripped off when it comes to delivering assets used to market our games. 6. Regarding spoilers, I wouldn't worry too much. If you don't want to know what the game looks like, sounds like, what the primary characters look like or a confirmation that the Covenant are going to cause serious issues on the planet, you may want to avoid it. We'll be talking a lot more about multiplayer soon as we creep towards the Beta. For the most part, I'd expect the PR to follow the same mold as Halo 3 - initial glimpse of the bigger picture and fictional context and characters, then lots of focus on Multiplayer, then a slice of campaign, then it's on sale. We are always conscious of holding back spoilers (though in the case of leaks, we can't control it and it breaks our hearts and angers us as much as you). 7. We have a lot of mixed opinions internally regarding the Believe and We are ODST ad campaigns. They have received a lot of critical acclaim for breaking new ground and doing new things for game advertising. At the end of the day, what they do well is establish emotional connections and pique interest in groups outside the core gamer, who arguably doesn't need to be convinced to buy Halo. In that regard, they were very successful. We can use VIDOCS, trailers, podcasts, Bungie.net and magazines to more directly address our fans and gamers. The opening cinematic footage being debuted at the VGAs is the opening salvo in what will amount to slowly building PR and Marketing assault leading up to release next year. Expectations are off the charts, it's a big game. It should be a wild ride between now and then.
