Firefight Solo Guide: Lost Platoon
Posted By: Monochron <Fleebop101@gmail.com>Date: 11/11/09 12:54 p.m.

This time I will be taking a look at Lost Platoon, one of the more beloved Firefight maps. Lost Platoon has seen some of the highest and, if I'm not mistaken, currently has the highest score in Firefight due mostly to its application of vehicles and the enjoyment of those who play it.

I'm writing this for those who love going it alone and finding a way to manage all aspects of the game without the assistance of other players. If you are looking for some tips as to how to hold certain areas and what weapons might be useful, then this may just be for you. Give her a read.

Lost Platoon

Lost Platoon can be played in many different ways mostly due to its vehicle centered gameplay, and multi-faceted layout. This map is surprisingly well suited for solo play and provides a dynamic environment in which different areas are beneficial to hold. Pistol ammo can be found on top of the garage building that you spawn in and on top of the center building along with SMG ammo. The Snipers are on top of the second garage and above the room that holds the Spartan laser.

When going solo on foot you are really hampered by the size of this level and the ability of the vehicles to keep you covered. Staying in the center building does not allow much cover and there aren't any good natural choke points to help funnel your enemies. Because of this one of the most popular ways to play the map is in a Chopper, giving you infinite ammo and wonderful rolling wheels of death to chew up some aliens. Without buddies driving around in the Warthog you will have to be very agile in the Chopper and will need to be able to take enemies out at a distance. I know Bungie isn't particularly fond of this method but it is the most efficient way to stay alive and have fun, which is really what this guide is about. If you want those hours-on-end games with high points and tons of fun, then this is probably the best way to play the level. Now, I definitely don't advocate sitting out of range of anyone and just shooting everything from a distance; this is not a fun way to play and isn't what I am going for here.

Basic Tips

There are three main places to hold with the Chopper that I have found; the area behind the garage you spawn in, the hill where you enter the level in campaign, and the depression to the right of that hill on the other side as the Wraith. Next I will discuss these three areas in detail and attempt to explain which works the best for me. In all of these areas I make sure to always do three things; collect Choppers, get the Spartan Laser early in the round and hold a pistol with it, and always be moving. I always try to have about four Choppers in the garage where you spawn. This allows you immediate access to another one if you are killed and gives you a way to escape any Brutes camping outside the Garage.

When you decide that you need to get some more Choppers you should use the Plasma Pistol (PP) to stop the vehicle so you may want to wait to pick up the Spartan Laser until after you are satisfied. Brutes have a tendency to get their vehicles jammed on the outlying rocks so be on the lookout for that. If you are jonesing too bad and need one immediately wait for them to pass you then jump out and hit them in the back with charged PP so as to take down their shield as well as stop the vehicle. A quick cap to the head after that and you have yourself a shiny new death machine. If you really want to roll in style just board the Chopper and save your ammo.

Garage Area

This area works well for holding due to the very long lines of sight from behind the garage as well as the two sides of the center building, which work well to direct your enemies. From behind the garage one thing you will have to watch out for is the Phantom drop directly to your right. This really isn't too much of a danger if you sit on the other side of the garage and take out the grunt gunner facing you as the phantom is coming in. You will be somewhat safe from fire and should be able to deal some damage to the guys as soon as they hit the ground but shooting them while they are still inside the dropship is fairly useless.

You sneaky guy, you

I usually sit back in the corner made in the rocks to get a good view of who is coming and use this spot to trap other Choppers in. I also usually don't go to the other side of the map much, but try to circle around the garage in order to stay moving. In front of the garage you are susceptible to a serious case of blue balls from the Wraith up on the hill to your left and behind you from the one out in the open to the right so keep moving. On top of the garage you have more pistol ammo if you need it but any time you abandon your Chopper make sure it is safe in the garage or behind it. It generally won't get stolen but a Wraith's globular goo will tear it apart.

Goodness, Gracious, Great balls of...blue...plasma...

Depression

This may be the weakest area to hold, as it is very difficult to see out and around the huge rock in front of you. One advantage is the size of that rock though. Enemies have to come around the two sides, aside from jet pack Brutes, which gives you a sizable area to drive around in. Even the Wraiths have difficulty getting at you here. It is very important to not limit yourself to staying inside the depression but to move up occasionally so you don't get trapped in. Circling around the rock helps to keep your enemies spread out and also draws in new ones so that you can finish them quickly.

The Hill

This is my area of choice due mostly to its great visibility and its single point of entry. Sitting on the slop gives you a good view of the field and lets you fall back to the top if you need to. Jet Pack Brutes will fly over the railing up top to avoid the slope though, so make sure to watch your back. From up top you also have a decent view of the Wraith on top of the other hill (as well as the one right at your feet) and should be able to take it out. Often you will find that Brutes may be knocked out of their Choppers or killed, leaving the vehicle intact, and these can pile up on the slope. I recommend clearing them out fairly regularly as you don't want to end up running into them while trying to dodge fire.

Grunt acrobats

Wraiths

You've got five shots in the Laser and 5 rounds. Hope you're feeling lucky punk. Somewhere towards the beginning of the round, head to the center building and pick up the Laser in the lower level room. If you are needing more Choppers for your creepy menagerie of death then hang on to the PP as well but if not you can keep your pistol. The Wraith on the opposite side of The Hill in the corner can be very difficult to hit under the cover of the trees but if you aim just below the gob lobbing turret you can generally hit it. If you are on The Hill you should get out of your Chopper as soon as the Wraith is flown in and fire as soon as it hits the ground. Aim for the nose just to be sure and you could even hit a Brute or two for some savory bonus points. After a few rounds the Chopper will become pretty useless against Wraiths. Spending time to shoot them is a waste and outright dangerous if there are other enemies afoot.

Splatters

Contrary to most guides for Lost Platoon I recommend being much more conservative with your splattering. Without teammates for a distraction all grenades will be pointed towards you. When the catch skull is not on you are much safer but still run the risk of someone pulling out a grenade right as you crush them. To avoid this, always hit Brutes and Grunts slightly to their right as the grenade will always be in their left hand. Hammer Brutes are also best to splatter and as they don't throw grenades you can generally just mow them down. Jet Pack Brutes are great for bonus splatter points as well as you can catch them right as they touch down before they have a chance to dodge out of the way. Fuel rod Brutes however, are best not splattered as they tend to nail you right as you make contact.

Infantry

The Chopper's cannon of death should be able to take out any Brutes, Grunts, and Jackals after a bit of fire and the large expanse in front of The Hill makes this even easier. Your first priority should be to kill any jackals with a charged PP shot. They will usually just hold it charged for a while giving themselves away and allowing you to make quick work of them before they fire. You can roam all around this open area and have the hilltop to fall back to if need be, but I try not to go to the other side of the center building if I can help it just to avoid coming around corners to nasty surprises or being trapped in the open. A good way to unveil invisible Brutes is to spray the area where you think they are with Chopper fire until you hit a few. Lighting the front of your Chopper on fire isn't so bad but don't let it touch your fragile body. A great way to get more points is to perch on The Hill and use your pistol for headshots. These kills are worth a good bit more and it adds a little variety to the match. You may want to stick your Chopper in the back to keep it away from grenades and it would be best to do this only when there isn't anyone particularly close to you.

Drones

Drones...even here they annoy the crap out of you. Your main concern with the Drones should be keeping them in front of the Chopper. With them in front you can plow through relatively quickly but with them behind they can bother you a good bit, especially with Blackeye on. It can be nearly impossible to melee bugs here so you want to do everything you can to drop them at range. Backing up to somewhere away from other enemies can help to take them down. Not much opportunity for humiliating these stuck up jerks when you do them in but whenever I splatter one I swear I can see a little buggy tear.

Or just turn tail and run

Chieftain Round

Your two biggest threats during the chieftain round will be from the Fuel Rod Chieftain and the Jet Pack Brutes. On The Hill Jet Pack Brutes will drop in from all sides and generally try to stick you. Be cautious about splattering and make sure to hit them as soon as they touch down. The Fuel Rod Brutes are your main trouble maker mostly because you don't have a good way to keep steady fire on them while dodging their attacks. As soon as I see one coming I usually abandon the hill for the open area in front and shoot them as much as I can while backing up and weaving to dodge any green headed my way.

Note: not actually a good idea

Chopper Tips

The problem with the Chopper is its lack of maneuverability requiring some skill to use it effectively. That's right, it's not just a bullet spraying noob machine. The Chopper has no reverse so going backwards is just your marine walking it backwards, Flintstones style, so if you need to turn around, drive forward in a small circle. This is especially helpful when picking up the lower health packs as backing out of that alleyway can lead to a swift death.
Instead of holding down the trigger and letting the cannon do all the work, rapidly pull the trigger like you were shooting a pistol. Do it fast enough and the cannons will fire faster than normal allowing you to move on to the next jerk quickly.
Never let a Chopper ram you. If any Chopper is ever boosting just get out of its way. It is an instant kill if that Chopper's nose touches yours so it is best to just let it go by and take it down after it has passed. It is risky to try to boost into another Chopper that is facing you, but if one is facing away go right ahead and ram.

Not a pretty way to go

Blackeye Round

Particularly when Blackeye is active you want to remain close to The Hill. Being in the Chopper keeps you from a lot of damage but limits your melee abilities. The best way to get a melee is to leave one Grunt alive on the field and run up to him for the melee. Make sure your Chopper is out of the way, strafe to the side to avoid his grenades, and crack him one in the face. Also if there are any Hammers around, hang on to one so that you can quickly get out and use it to recharge your shields.

Bonus Round

Don't splatter in the bonus round. Don't even use the Chopper. You maximize grunty destruction by standing at the corner of the center building in between the spawn garage and where they are dropped off and laying them out with the pistol. Toss some grenades as they start to jump out then fire away as they line up across the field. Be sure to back up to avoid the grenades that they throw but in short time you should be able to get plenty of medals and the extra life. Driving your Chopper around in piles of Grunts puts you right around all their grenades not to mention the Phantom raining down pink death right above you. If you want to stick around for some points and lives, stick to the pistol.

And as always you need to make sure to play with some style so if the opportunity presents itself, make sure to get some major air.

Thanks again for reading!
