Ghosts Of Onyx comic (behind the scenes)*IMG*s
Posted By: Leviathan <levihoff@yahoo.com>Date: 8/7/09 2:53 p.m.

We thought it would be insightful or maybe even motivational to show how UNSC Trooper and I went about doing this comic together. I had mentioned before in Page 1's description about how it was very much engineered to practice a realistic comic book process. We scripted, thumbnailed, reviewed and revised, penciled and colored. So here is page 2 of the Ghosts of Onyx Preview comic in a step-by-step look at how we did it.

PAGE 2 SCRIPT by UNSC Trooper

Panel 1: The rooftop of the guardhouse is displayed. Against it, the dim silhouette of the sun is visible, although obstructed by the treetops. There are two guards on the roof. One of them lays dead, and the other stands. The guard who is still standing receives a blow to the head by an invisible sniper (Linda). The bullet races through his head and exits, his body twitching.

The description for this panel should be: “In a heartbeat, the unsuspecting guardians fall, and along with them, the prey’s last chance to survive.”

Panel 2: John sprints for the guardhouse, Kurt following behind him, and Kelly running ahead of them. In the background, the forest is crossed by the river as the three Spartans run over the bridge to the guardhouse.

A brief description should also be featured in this panel: “The lion pack moves closer toward the greater herd. Together, their movements are synchronized, perfectly balanced and flawless.”

Panel 3 (this panel would look better if it were split into two pictures): The first picture shows Kelly jumping on the roof of the guardhouse, and the second picture shows her opening the vent and dropping three flashbang grenades.

Panel 4: John grabs the handle of the guardhouse’s steel door; his foot is braced against the wall. Kurt stands behind him, looking to his right, weapon holstered.

A sound effect is written off-panel as the flashbangs inside the room explode: “Thump! Thump! Thump!”

Panel 5: The door is opened and Kurt enters the room, John still posting beside the door. Kurt fires his SMG as he walks into the room, bullets hitting three guards. Behind Kurt there are three rows of security monitors placed on several desks, a few chairs aligned in front of them. The monitors display multiple parts of the rebel base.

PAGE 2 THUMBNAILS

You can see that I didn't follow UNSC Trooper's descriptions to the letter. I moved characters and details around in the panels to make my angles work, or moved content to other panels or saved the details to be highlighted in other pages where I could. This comic was mostly a challenge of finding a balance between our two visions like this.

PAGE 2 PENCILS

I penciled these pages on a big bristol board (these were specifically cut for comic format, but looking back, it's far cheaper to buy your own board and crop it yourself). I chose not to ink to save a little time, but mostly because I could darken the pencil marks, once scanned, and then preserve the sketchy marks of the style I went with for this comic. Where Uprising seemed over-inked and blocky to me, I wanted to go the other route.

PAGE 2 COLORS

Here I just painted below a darker version of the pencils in a 'multiply' filter in Photoshop with a graphic tablet. Not the most experienced with these fancy things yet, but in this form, it's just like filling in a coloring book. There are far faster routes of coloring work in Photoshop, but I liked the results doing everything by hand achieved. For some of the special effects and computer screens I would add other layers of color and blur those out to give the illusion of lights and backlighting.

PAGE 2 FORMAT AND LETTERS

For this comic I found a neat style for the speech bubbles by creating the white shapes with the shape tool, duplicating that layer, inverting it, and then gaussian blurring it till it created this shadow below the bubbles. Of course I picked a page without any dailogue... but those 'THUMPS' were created in a similar way with blurred versions of the text hiding below in another layer to create that glowing affect.

And there you have it! You can check out black & white and color versions of more of the pages on my DeviantArt site below or just wait for the complete PDF I'm finishing right now and about to send off to my publisher... er HBO....
