The Flood
Posted By: Khaim <deguild@nc.rr.com>Date: 2/9/02 7:12 a.m.

I did one of these yesterday about the Forerunner, and decide to do this one about the Flood. Anyway, here's what little we know...

1) They infect intelligent beings and use them as hosts. We know for sure that humans and Elites become warrior-type Flood, designed to kill hosts for easy infection. There has been speculation, but no proof, that other species mutate into Carrier flood, which then spawn Infection, etc.

2) They have a hive mind. 343GS says this. And yes, I know he's insane (at least) but why would he lie?

3) They are individually stupid but collectively smart. This is pure speculation on my part, but it makes sense. They tend to use straight-forward attacks (charge and kill) which doesn't mean they're stupid- what does is that they even do this when they're alone. The mass rush tactic only makes sense if you have huge numbers- one on one it's just stupid.
Collectively, they, well, manage to wipe out everyone they meet (except for MC). Besides, 343GS says they're smart. I would guess that, although they have a hive mind, it's not constant. That is, the collective mind uses everyone's brain capacity, (what little is left) but only concentrates on a few individuals at a time. Individuals on their own use simple tactics, but can do complex things if needed.
Other little behavioral quirks- they can use most any weapon, probably without help from the hive mind. Throughout the game, they use everything but swords, shields, and grenades (although they carry grenades, I've yet to see them use them). They prefer to bash down doors, instead of trying to pick the lock.

Now I'm really off topic, but how were they contained at the swamp facility? We know they can bash through Forerunner doors, because we see such doors going back. If there is a holding place with super-strong doors, where is it?

3) I would guess, and this is even more speculation than #2, that the Infection forms have a life cycle independent of hosts. That is, they can produce more Infection spores with just organic material, not a host. This seems the most likely answer to "How did they survive without prey?" Maybe they don't need it- it just helps.

Comments welcome.
