In Response To: Sleightrocity! - HBO LAN (Sep7imus [subnova])

As Claude knows, it's tough to organize a LAN party nowadays because you want to invite so many people but you also have limitations... room size, balancing fun-vs-overcrowding, etc. I mean no disrespect to others that would've expected to be invited. I also wanted to make sure I invited folks I never had the pleasure of meeting face-to-face. Sept is a perfect example - he's someone I've admired for his contributions to the Halo community (not the least of said contributions within our small universe here at HBO forum - intelligent posting always gets extra notice by me) yet even after all these years, I never had the pleasure to shake his hand and do some in-yo-face fragging with the dude.

Onwards,

: Now, as you may remember, this past weekend was not really conducive to
: travel. Nonetheless, I made it down from Boston (with a little help from
: our own Louis Wu, who picked me up from the train halfway there), and
: other HBO regulars made it from all over the place, overcoming some pretty
: incredible travel delays. The longest distance traveled was by
: Schedonnarus who flew up all the way from Texas, despite flight delays and
: cancellations and then an Amtrak machine bluescreening on him. Despite
: that, he was the first one to arrive. But, the most harrowing travel
: story, at least from what I could tell, had to be the drive from Ohio
: undertaken by SonofMacphisto and Nomi, who pushed all the way across
: Pennsylvania in the middle of a crazy snowstorm to arrive on Friday night.

As the crow flies I think Schooly is located a few hundred miles further west in TX, but you're right; Schedonnardus *traveled* the most since he had to deal with plane cancellations and last minute Amtrak and NYC Subway travel adjustments.

A tip of the hat to all of you for showing up... no cancellations due to weather... though Konrad did a 360 on the highway Friday and had to try again the following day. My one complaint is that due to this shitty weather, we did not get a chance to visit some of the tourist spots... a few of you had never been to NYC and it would've been nice to at least get out of the house for a bit and look around the place... but the snow and crappy traffic conditions just made it too difficult. me sad :(

“Hey come to my LAN party. Oh, don’t mind the SNOWSTORM!”

Going to pick up Ed/Sched at the nearby subway station.

The funny thing is how he text'd me to let me know what he looks like as I headed over to the subway station to pick him up. "A&M sweatshirt and cowboy boots" Yep, no problem picking him out of the NYC crowd. ;-)

Toto, I don’t think we’re in Kansas (viz. Texas) anymore!

Mando tries out Ed's boots.

: Slowly, we all gathered at Mig’s house, some on Friday night, some on
: Saturday morning. In all, it was quite a collection of HBOers, some old,
: some new. I finally met the following people in person: Louis Wu, Miguel,
: KP, nawf, Konrad, Neo, Count Zero, JYNX, Furhman, Nomi, Malagate,
: SonofMacPhisto, Schedonnardus, Schooly D, and Mig’s son DeadlySniper12.
: Quite a motley wonderful collection of people, from the
: highly-unskilled-but-big-fans-of-the-game (me, Wu…) to the
: crazy-skillful-throwing-off-the-balance-on-all-of-the-teams (Jynx, Nomi,
: Schooly…).

One highlight for me was Saturday morning as we started to gear up, we all sat around and watched Colbert Christmas and much laughing ensued.

: Mig was the consummate host (as were the rest of his family, though his
: lovely wife had the good sense and grace to leave for the weekend – I got
: to meet her before she left, and she was great).

Frieda took Mando to Hershey, PA Saturday into Sunday. It was for the best, but she was disappointed when she came back Sunday late afternoon and the place looked like no one had ever been there! She usually likes the post-LAN chat - it's much quieter. Anyway, kudos to you all for putting everything back just right. ;-)

: On Friday night at 1AM he
: took us to a 24-hour deli nearby where we got to order fatty cheesesteaks
: and other sandwiches and to hang out waiting for them with a really large
: crowd of local white kids calling each other “nigga.” (Queens, represent!)
: Those sandwiches were delicious and the next day, we ordered more. But,
: that didn’t stop Mig from loading us all down with food throughout the
: weekend. He made pancakes on Saturday morning and pasta at some point on
: Saturday, and I think he even grilled paninis that night. My arteries
: definitely hardened over the course of the weekend, and the plentiful
: candy, sodas, and beers probably took a year off of my life.

I had a goal of, besides buying a few bags of candy and trail mix, to make sure you all had easy access to left over Halloween candy and chips and stuff from previous parties. I like to cook anyway, since I get tired of the all-junk-food mode some other LANs fall into.

: At one point, using a complex scoring system known only to him, KP handed out
: a bunch of Bungie swag. (He clearly just had this stuff laying around at
: work and didn’t think all that highly of it (he’s spoiled), but we were
: psyched!) I got a copy of Ghosts of Onyx and a Grunt figure, but some of
: the more esoteric stuff included wall-hangings and a copy of the halo
: graphic novel in some Scandinavian language that we couldn’t identify!

KP was a champ as always and much thanks to Sketch for the swag!

: But, it wasn’t all eating and drinking and swagging and making merry. We also
: played some Halo! We set up three large screens (Mig’s big-ass flatscreen,
: plus two projectors) and four small screens: giving us four players on the
: large ones and one on each of the small ones. We all crowded into Mig’s
: living room and tried to avoid stepping on each other, knocking over the
: Christmas tree, being sat upon by Furhman, or stepping on Mig’s dog’s
: tails. (Much of the lounging was done on the Sumo beanbags that Wu
: brought –he swears by them, and they were fairly comfortable (I slept on
: one on Friday night), but Mig’s dogs made pretty clear that they were
: essentially overpriced dog beds. (I hope someone will post some pics of
: the living room set-up!)

I didn't take many pics, too busy being host, but I hope Furhman and some others can pass along their pics here. And stupidly I took none of the room when gaming was at full bore: dark with only the screens/tv's glow to show the 'awesomeness' of this LAN.

Pic taken 4:30PM Saturday. What's with the black paper on the wall? I'll let you guess.

Pic taken 7PM Saturday. Our feet are growing roots.

Ichabod lounging around.

Bungie schwag.

Still gaming at 2AM. Notice who parked themselves on the sofa.

Lady and Ichabod guarding the festivities.

The whole gang!
