My Theory on the Legendary Ending *kinda long*
Posted By: Neloms <nelomski@sympatico.ca>Date: 7/30/08 10:01 p.m.

Since Halo 3 came out, people have theorized about the meaning of the Legendary ending. I don’t know if the theory I am about to present has been considered before, but I personally have not seen it discussed.

First, a recap of what happened at the end of Halo 3:
While the Arbiter’s half of Forward Unto Dawn successfully made it through the portal back to Earth, the Chief’s half was lost as the portal closed. As we leave the Master Chief at the end of the game, we find him lost in an unknown corner of the galaxy. He puts himself in cryo sleep and Forward Unto Dawn drifts endlessly through space… Enter the Legendary ending. After an unknown period of time drifting, the Chief’s section of Forward Unto Dawn stumbles upon what appears to be a planet covered with forerunner architecture and symbols.

It is unknown when or where this occurs, but after having given it a great deal of thought, I don’t believe that this is Onyx, as previously theorized by some (which is impossible since Onyx is gone and all that is left is a micro Dyson Sphere), or a direct connection to the Marathon series.

First of all, I don’t believe the Chief is in the future. I believe he is in the past. Wait! Don’t stop reading. I know what you’re thinking! Time travel in the Halo?? WTF? This isn’t Star Trek… I have evidence to back this up. I believe the portal collapsing has caused the Chief to go through a temporal rift, sending him hundreds of thousands of years into the past, when the forerunners were still alive and just before they activated the Halo array to stop the flood.

The Chief has an obvious connection with the forerunner that has never been fully explained in any of the books or games. He instinctively is able to activate Forerunner control panels and such, Guilty Spark refers to him specifically as “Reclaimer” for some unknown reason, and the juiciest bit of evidence of all: Guilty Spark recalls meeting the chief in the past.

This is exemplified in the following lines of dialogue from Guilty Spark in Halo 1 (Two Betrayals):

“Technically, this installation's pulse has a maximum effective radius of twenty-five thousand light years. But, once the others follow suit, this galaxy will be quite devoid of life, or at least any life with sufficient biomass to sustain the flood. (pause) But you already knew that. I mean, how couldn't you?”
“Why would you hesitate to do what you have already done?”
“Last time, you asked me, if it was my choice, would I do it? Having considerable time to ponder your query, my answer has not changed.”

And also (The Maw):
“You can't imagine how exciting this is! To have a record of all of our lost time! Human history, is it? Fascinating.”

Either Guilty Spark is delusional and is mistaking the Chief for someone else, or the Chief was the one who activated the Halo rings the first time, thousands of years ago. Somehow, the portal closing has sent the Chief into the past where he will meet the Forerunner, take an active part in the activation of the Halo array the first time, and will be given the title of Reclaimer.

My theory is that the next game will chronicle the chief’s journey in the past up until the Halos are activated, killing every living thing in the galaxy. The best part is, I believe Cortana will be with him.

While smart AI’s like Cortana can only live 7 years, and who knows how long the Chief and Cortana have been floating through space even though they are in the past, I believe Cortana is going to be the first AI who is immune to Rampancy. I came to this conclusion while watching the Halo Universe Discussion Panel at Comic Con 08. Joseph Staten asks one of the fans: “How long do AI’s live, except for Cortana?” I believe after having been subjected to the strain of interfacing with Halo, Cortana’s “rampancy threshold” has been reversed, allowing her to live longer. This is just a theory, but it would make the new Halo game much more interesting for the Chief to have a companion.

Thanks for reading!
