The Guardians Glitch - Why does this happen?
Posted By: Ultimate_Dragon <gnrl_wolf@hotmail.com>Date: 3/13/08 7:24 p.m.

For those unaware as to what this glitch is, I shall explain it and give links to proof.

Synopsis:
An object traveling at a significant speed, enough that when contact with a player is made, the player has his/her shields removed. This speed will be referred to as the Contact Speed. If this object exceeds the Contact Speed, the player will be killed, and if the Contact Speed is not reached, either the shields will only be partially removed or there will be no effect. Once the player has had his/her shields removed, meleeing the object which hit them will cause the player to instantly keel over and be "Killed by the Guardians." The Contact Speed for each object is directly proportional to the mass and size of the object in question.

Discovery:
During creation of my third rube goldberg machine for the "S v N" series on Rat's Nest, I set up a simple system that would launch a missile into the air with hopes that it would kill the player who it hit. Of course, the missile only removed my guinea pig's (TheSlinger) shields. It was late and we really wanted a nice ending death to the trap. Slinger, out of rage, started to melee the missile which had hit him AFTER his shields had recharged and a few seconds had passed. To my amazement, Slinger keeled right over, "Killed by the Guardians."

Research:
After this occurrence was review in theater mode, we tried numerous variations of objects and player models. We found out that Elites are more vulnerable to this glitch, and that any object smaller than a barrel cannot be accelerated to Contact Speed reliably. For some reason, it seemed only non-hosts were affected by this glitch as well, unless the Host was on the "Local" setting, and even then it would not occur every time. Furthermore, the glitch would be canceled if touched or damaged by another player. Shields and jumping seemed to have no effect either. Finally, if the object that was accelerated to Contact Speed was touched by the host in any way, the person affected by the glitch would be instead be killed by the Host.

Conclusion:
This lead us to deduce that the host had believed the player to be dead, which, upon reconnecting with the missile through melee, was enforced to a violent conclusion. This cannot be confirmed without a Bnet employee's analysis, but I doubt one will stop by. For now though, this is an interesting, if not funny, glitch with the physics engine.

Sources/Proof:
Because by now, I have a feeling people are screaming for proof, I have provided two clips in my file share for your use. They are titled: "Missile Failure" and "S v N 3". These were clips I took during our research and during the actual rube goldberg machine clip for "S v N #3."

Discuss.
