I was curious to see if there was any possible scenario where somebody might have to lead their target with the spartan laser. Basically I placed some crates out at the edge of the map on Sandtrap (the crates are for standing on and not getting killed by the mines). And then fired the laser across the diameter of the map.
Then I went to theater and watched the replay in slow motion. If I could see the laser shot travel across the map in more than one frame, then in must take some time to travel right? Then I was going to see how close that speed was to the actual speed of light, but I was stopped short of my nerdy investigation. Not only does the laser shot appear all at once in a single frame, the laser actually has a maximum range of about 3/4 of the entire diameter of Sandtrap (including the minefields).
Instead I decided to make a screenshot of a laser blast coming up just short of my face. It turns out the splash damage area isn't just in a tube around the laser shot, it also does damage at the tip of the red beam of light. If you're close enough, the laser can kill you with it's tip without the animated red light actually touching you. That's why you see my shield flaring up. I'm right in front of where the shot comes up short, but it does splash my shield a little.
Another thing you might notice is that the red beam is actually just two flat images forming a sort of plus sign, but you can't tell from any other angle unless you're looking at the tip of the beam. And who would do that right?
