According to this article, Halo 3 has engaged the hardcore about as much as expected but surprisingly has engaged the casual gamer about as much as Guitar Hero III. *blink-blink* Decidedly not what I'd expected.
The company "BrandIntel" did a survey of game sites and blogs tracking Internet discussions on games, and found that Halo 3 came up often in discussions on the 360 (and, post release, apparently improved the public perception of whether the 360 was worth buying) and was greeted with as much positive discussion as GH3 on sites dealing with casual games.
I haven't actually read the full report, so I can't really judge how accurate this impression is, but if it is in-line with the real-world impression then Halo 3 may have hit the mainstream more than I expected.
-- Steve now awaits the wails of "sell out!" from those who feel that shooters should be the sovereign domain of obsessives "elite" gamers.
