Bungie and Shaping the Fan Community

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/1986/shaping_your_community_what_films_.php

Gamasutra posted an article on how film and game studios can (and should) interact with their fan communities and hold up Bungie as an example of getting it (mostly) right. I'll quibble a bit with the article; they seem to date the interaction back only to Luke Smith's hiring, completely ignoring the roles Frankie and Matt performed earlier (or, worse yet, hiding them under the blanket of "corporate messages") unless I've badly misunderstood what they're saying.

-- Steve thinks that lukems does more of what Bungie was already doing, not (necessarily) a qualitative change but a quantitative one.
