Posting Halo 3 screenshots to Flickr
Posted By: kapowaz <halo.bungie.org@kapowaz.net>Date: 10/15/07 8:17 p.m.

Right, after all the brouhaha earlier regarding taking screenshots in Halo 3 and all the clunkiness that goes along with it, I've decided I'll be using Flickr to keep an archive of all my shots. The process for getting them from Xbox 360 to my Flickr account is somewhat convoluted, but it works. It also gives me the necessary platform on which to perform all manner of taxonomical geekiness.

Actually, I should say folksonomical geekiness really, as I'm talking about tagging. Oh yes.

Flickr lets you organise photos into sets (for instance, my Halo 3 set) - so far, easy enough - but it also lets you pull out photos in a variety of interesting ways, including user-defined tags. Now what this means is I can do stuff like pull out all of my shots from multiplayer at once. Or, all the shots from campaign taken in cutscenes.

So why tell you all about this? Well, if you build it, they will come is a phrase springing to mind. Tagging is like planting a seed; if enough people do it, it'll grow into something cool in new and interesting ways. In particular I've got machine tags in mind; take a look at this one, for instance. If you look on the right you'll see an arrow to show/hide machine tags, and I've added one which says halo3:gameid=61404850. All I've done here is extract the gameid from the query string part of the address for the details of the game the screenshot was taken in.

So what might this be useful for? Well, if enough people do it, you'll be able to build up a library of all Halo 3 screenshots on flickr, and link them back to the game they were taken in. And that's just scratching the surface of what it could be used for.

So in summary, I'd like to encourage people who take Halo 3 screenshots and use Flickr (boy, that's going to limit it for starters) to tag their photos:

  • "Halo 3" for starters

  • "campaign" or "multiplayer"

  • the name of the campaign mission (in quotes)

  • spoilers (if applicable)

  • cutscene (if it was a cutscene)

  • halo3:gameid= then the game ID from bungie.net for multiplayer games

  • halo3:gamertag= then your Gamer Tag (if you want people to know your identity on Xbox Live)

If this has interested you at all, please feel free to contribute!
