Theory about Voi
Posted By: Hunt3r <the87th@yahoo.com>Date: 6/12/07 4:46 p.m.

the following is my theory about the significance of the city Voi (Kenya) in Halo 3.

i'll start with what sparked my little "investigation" (i used the quotes because all i really did was some google image search and some photoshop)

1. on the bungie.net forums, AR posted the coordinates 3:22:44S (-3.3788) x 38:34:07E (38.5687).
these coordinates are the location of the city Voi, which is in kenya. the name is also on the halo 2 soundtrack. it is also [SPOILERS] the name of two levels in halo 3 (supposedly).[end spoilers]

2. i figured voi is the site where the ark is buried. why? because it's mentioned so much and the ark seems to be such a prominent event in halo 3's campaign. So how would one go about finding if Voi is close to the ark? well in the halo 3 trailer (the one with the ark, from e3), we see the ark is buried beneath a massive craterlike canyon. basically there's a huge pit in the ground and the covenant have been digging in there to find the ark. so i looked for a big pit.

3. i found a big pit right next to voi. how did i do this? that's complicated. first, i had to find a topographical map of kenya. google didn't help much there, so i changed my search to an elevation map of kenya. same thing, right? anyways what i got was this:

4. armed with this crappy map, i needed to figure out where voi was on that map. so i overlayed the map for voi i found on wikipedia (don't worry, i made sure wikipedia thinks voi is in the same place as the coordinates think it is- i used wikipedia's map because it was easier to photoshop). so i left only the roads and voi on wikipedia's map, then stretched it over my topographical map to see where voi is:

5. now i looked close to Voi for any depressions in the map. i found two big ones:

if you zoom in, you can see that both circled areas are surrounded by small mountains (brown) and high plains (yellow), yet both depress quite a bit to the blue-green elevation. this would be a lot more factually accurate if i could find a key for the map, but alas none exists.

6. is this definate proof? no. is it interesting that there are two areas large enough to fit the ark in very close proximity to voi, both of which have views of large mountains in the distance? i think so.

ok now go point out all the mistakes i made :)
