Rule of 3 Stuff
Posted By: Louis Wu <halo@bungie.org>Date: 5/17/07 10:06 a.m.

Okay, I'm writing this because I need a place to put this info, in case I need to reference it for a news post.

It's clear that some of the people that signed up for the Rule of 3 have not received their invites - and yes, that sucks.

First thing to check - your junk/spam folder. Lots and lots and LOTS of them went here. (Yet another reason I hate HTML-formatted email; in these days of massive spam filtering, HTML-formatted messages get lost a LOT, even when they're legitimate.)

For some people, severe filtering occurs at the server level (done by your service provider, COMPLETELY out of your control) - for these people, that message went out, as expected, from Microsoft, but never arrived in your inbox - because your ISP threw it away. Unless you have an ISP with a decent customer service department, you'll never even be able to find out if this really happened. This isn't your fault, this isn't Microsoft's fault (well, beyond their sending out an email that looks a lot like spam) - and you might not even be able to yell at your ISP, if you can't determine if they did this or not.

For some (I'm guessing small) subset of the original winners, Microsoft might have actually made a mistake and not SENT you the message - and for this group, you SHOULD be able to call 1-800-4MYXBOX and (after waiting on hold for an hour) be transferred to SOMEONE who can look up whether you were supposed to get the message. Maybe.

FOR EVERYONE IN THIS PROGRAM: The one thing you CANNOT do is blame Bungie for your problem. The Rule of 3 program was NOT THEIRS - it was MICROSOFT'S. Bungie employees have no access to the list of recipients of this program, they can't check for you if you're in, they can't get a code reissued if yours is lost. Yelling at them is like calling Bank of America and bitching because US Bank lost your deposit slip.

And yes, it's true that they weren't responsible for the Crackdown problem either - they didn't fix that one any more than they can fix your Rule of 3 issue - but they were more vocal about what was being done because an obvious problem had occurred, one that needed fixing (and one that affected 3/4 of a million people). For the Ro3 crowd, according to Microsoft, all emails were sent out successfully; the actual mistakes - the folks left out accidentally - make up a TINY fraction of the total, and all OTHER problems are really out of Microsoft's control. It's not that Bungie believes you (the Ro3 folks) are less important than the Crackdown folks - it's that one group was blocked by a bug, while the other seems to be affected by the state of the internet today.

I haven't been given any information about who to contact (past the standard Xbox Live Service Center number, listed above) to resolve your problem... I think that's because nobody at Microsoft has PROVIDED that info - to me, to Bungie, to anyone. If you're an Ro3 winner, and you didn't get your code, you're sort of on your own to figure out why - yeah, that sucks, but it's really not Bungie's fault, and there's really not a lot they can do for you.
