Crackdown, how I have misjudged thee *OT*
Posted By: Wayward Spleen™Date: 2/13/07 9:09 p.m.

So after being vocal about Crackdown, I decided to download it and see if there's any place for it on my shelf. Afterall, if it was in fact just a cheap GTA clone, I could ascertain that pretty quickly and be no worse for the wear.

Before playing the demo, I read the developer interview and thought that it sounded pretty interesting. Figured I'd download it and give it a run through before the kids got home.

I tried sticking to the missions but got pretty quickly distracted by all the pretty lights at night. I found myself swimming to an island just to look around (found a few hidden orbs on the way). Definitely a pretty game, I thought, as I took the time to look around...

Before I knew it, I was advised that I only had 30 minutes left. I quit out and started over; this time taking an SUV from the garage before departing. I mowed down a few gang members, and started hunting down agilty points. Before I knew it, I was stage two, and told that I only had 30 minutes left. I had spotted a bunch of agility points and just collected them for the next 20 minutes or so. Then I preceded to drive to the bridge, jumped off, and spent a good 3 minutes or so getting up the large building on the police island. Then I took the time to just walk around and look. The landscape was beautiful, the city almost peaceful from the height. I have to say that for nothing else, I'm considering buying this game to just get a character capable of climbing up to the highest buildings and then just skywatching to relax.

It would appear to have something for everyone. Like shooters? The 3rd person aiming is implemented well and other than some minor targeting complaints, is quite nice. Like GTA? I imagine (based upon my accidental mowing over a fellow officer in the garage my first run through) that you could even become an anti-cop and play it like a straight up GTA clone. Will the gang members not kill you? No clue, but it might be interesting to find out. Like just wandering around a beautifully crafted world? Crackdown has that too.

The fighting and gun fights (along with the architecture and cell shading) really reminded me of the fun I used to have playing Oni. There's something about Crackdown that looks like it'll be lots of fun to play through different ways depending upon your mood.

Will my kids be allowed to play? Not sure. I ran the demo through without any sound, though there's a warning for language. Accordingly, I still don't think my kids will be around if my speakers are on. However, Crackdown is definitely (at first blush) not cut from the same cloth as GTA...

Verdict: if you have a 360, take the time to download the demo for Crackdown. Even if you're already in the Halo 3 beta, you might find yourself with a reason to buy Crackdown - it's definitely a game that reeks of potential...
