What's the attraction of points etc? | |

In Response To: Halo 3 achievements. (Gravemind) What I want to know is, what the heck is the attraction with this achievements and points business? The medals for completing campaign levels in H1, ok fair enough, that's a standard thing and they were at least nice to look at. But aside from that, I'm bemused by the whole thing. As far as campaign goes, my interest is in defeating the enemy and enjoying it, period. I don't need to be awarded points to get my satisfaction, and it would greatly annoy me if that impinged into the gameplay in any way (such as in Brute Force where you see a points tally floating away from an enemy you just killed, thereby reducing things to the feel of a retro arcade game rather than a fully immersive experience). If I ever get onto Live for multiplayer, I'd likewise be playing solely for the intrinsic satisfaction of battle. So, what's it all about? Can someone explain the attraction? And maybe give some good examples of rewards that would actually reflect good gameplay in some sense? Or is it basically just about chasing points for the sake of it, courtesy of some sort of primeval videogaming desire for seeing large numbers rack up?
