In Response To: Re: Story and Gameplay Integration (3Suns) This is a daunting thread to try to jump into, but here goes. There's been some talk about game lengths, and how reviewers sometimes pick on it as a measure of worth, foolishly ignoring the far more important matter of replayability. In fact, you could have a game so different that it would be meaningless to consider the 'length' at all. I fondly imagine a 'battle-based' Halo game which simply comprises ten or so carefully designed megabattles, each lasting several minutes or more. No great need for storyline at all, except maybe for a bit of tactical orientation. Each battle could just be some isolated encounter that MC experienced at some point in his fight against the Covenant. Huge battlefield with lots of interesting features allowing all sorts of battle plans. Masses of enemy, lots of Marines, lots of weapon choice, all adding up to extreme replayability. The existing Halo megabattles are already darned good, yet they were unintended as far as I know. When I think of what a megabattle could be like when explicitly designed as such, it's a mouth-watering prospect. Such a battle-based game would be quite different from the standard level-based game in which you go through level after level in an overall linear way unravelling a story. Although you could have the battles connected by storyline, it would basically be all about concentrated high-intensity combat. Pick a battle, play and replay. Quite how the reviewers would react I'm not sure. It would be meaningless to talk about its length, given that all the value is in the replayability. Would such a game sell? Maybe one day someone will market one and we'll find out. Anyone from Bungie listening? Will it help if I get down on my knees and grovel?
