Deadly Night Write-Up *long*
Posted By: retsamolah <samesdios@gmail.com>Date: 12/31/06 12:03 a.m.

Yesterday at about noon, I arrived home from the house of the venerable Louis Wu. A lot has happened since then, which I’ll go into later, but it was the close of an incredibly enjoyable few days with some just plain awesome people. It all went a little something like this...

On Tuesday the 26th at around 3, I got in the car and drove out to JFK airport to pick up hellmitre. He had been planning to fly out from San Francisco to come visit me and get owned in halo in person instead of on live, but during the drive home, I dropped the bombshell: there’s an HBO LANfest on Thursday... and we’re going. He was pretty happy, to say the least. After going home, some awkward introductions to my family (“you’re from... the internet?”), long hours of halo, a little bit of sleep, and some greasy food from Garden Catering, he and I loaded up all our gear, hopped in the car and set off for the middle of nowhere, CT. There was some traffic on 95 so it took a little longer than expected, but we arrived at HBO HQ at about 7 PM on Wednesday night.

Sundance (one of Claude’s dogs), Konrad, Ma1agate, Schooly D, and Louis Wu himself met us at the door, and after some warm introductions, we got our stuff and started setting up. In the basement, there was already 1 projector set up, and the plan was to set mine up next to it. Louis has these awesome ceiling mounts for them, so in just a few minutes, my $2000 piece of equipment was dangling precariously from the ceiling by a few flimsy pieces of plastic. Fortunately, those flimsy pieces of plastic worked fine and we were off and running. Hellmitre set up his box in Lou’s office and I set up my camera to record game play in there, and we got into a game right away.

First up was a 6v6 CTF Classic on Sanctuary. The teams were very evenly matched and the game remained tied at 1 flag apiece for about an hour… until the pizza arrived. Sometime around then Miguel arrived with Jillybean and Deanero and it was great to see Mig again and to meet Jilly. We all ate and talked and hung out and generally enjoyed spending time with all these people we never see.

But then it was back to the gaming. The titans, Schooly and I, met on the field of battle, and the cameras were rolling. He and I had planned to 1v1 at the LAN and record both perspectives, and so I set up downstairs and Schooly upstairs and we squared off. After the first game, we switched spots and played 2 more. Schooly won the first 2 and I won the 3rd one, but they were all very close. Schooly only won, though, because every time I’d shoot at him he would run away and hide like a little pansy then snipe me from somewhere.

Actually, in all seriousness, Schooly is by far the best person I’ve played and quite a nice guy to top it off. Plus myself and everybody else who attended had a great time ripping on him every chance we got.

After that I was pretty exhausted, so I zoned out and watched people play Gears of War for a while, then blasted through the first few levels of Halo 1 on co-op with hellmitre, then crashed on a futon in the basement.

Day 2: Thursday the 28th, the actual LAN date:

I woke up around 9 and groggily stumbled upstairs. Almost everybody was already awake, eating breakfast (eggs and bacon), so I grabbed myself some and sat down and tried to wake myself up. I ended up downstairs on one of the projectors with CYBRFRK and Deanero and we played a whole bunch of games throughout the day. However, I can’t really remember any of them, so I’m not going to go into any detail. Trust me, they were fun. CYBR had a great time bellowing into his headset and hearing his ridiculously deep, demonic voice reverberate throughout the house.

KP had brought a whole load of bungie shwag and Claude had some b.org stuff, and Blackstar had a very special gift that was a surprise, and so, as is something of a LAN tradition, there was a kind of competition to win some cool stuff. KP, TheDonWan, and Shishka (I think) came up with a list of gametypes and prizes corresponding with random gamestats (deaths closest to 77, etc.). Then there would be a Fist Ass Extreme game to decide on Blackstar’s prize. We all scattered to various screens to play the games. There was a TS on Sanctuary, a Juggernaut on Ascension, a 1 flag CTF on Ivory Tower, a No Shields Shotties CTF on Beaver Creak, an FFA slayer on Midship. I forget which prizes corresponded to which games, but I ended up winning a H2 soundtrack vol.2, and a b.org t-shirt (which I forgot to bring home… whoops) and other people got other various stuff. The pizza arrived sometime around then, and so we pigged out then played the FAE to decide the final prize. Schooly won. The douche bag. But the prize ended up going to Mintz who had the highest hit percentage (Schooly wasn’t too happy). The prize turned out to be a plaque with the MC’s hand holding an SMG, from one of the halo 2 promotional statues that Blackstar had acquired from somewhere. Needless to say, it was awesome. Lucky Mintz and his overuse of the plasma pistol.

After that, me, CYBR, hellmitre, Louis, Jilly and some others loaded up some halo 1. We started with a CTF BG (of course) and the team of hellmitre and the GT guys won handily (pistol whores), and so we played some rockets on prisoner, a rockets CTF on hang em high and some other classics. It was really, fun, as usual, but I was surprised at how few people wanted to actually play halo 1, claiming “oh I’ve played that game way, way too much in my life already.” Sure that’s probably true, but… it’s an HBO LAN for god sakes!

It was about 11:30 PM at that point, and I had a craving for some ice cream for some reason… so Schooly, Jilly, hellmitre and I piled into my car and drove out to a local stop and shop to pick some up for everybody. A little bit after we got back, Frankie arrived and everybody stopped playing Gears or Guitar Hero (yes, at the Halo LAN… norbs) to greet him. I hadn’t actually met him, although most there had, so it was quite fun meeting the face behind the BWU’s. Frankie left sometime later (kind of a waste of time for him, I guess, but… cool for the rest of us) and people started hitting the sack. Pretty soon it was just me, Schooly, hellmitre, Jilly, Konrad, Louis, FragQu33n, and GT Raccoon still awake in the living room just sitting and talking. For me, this was the best part of the entire experience, no TVs or Xboxes on, just a bunch of great people hanging out, shooting the breeze. We tried in vain to get a truf or dare going (turns out Jilly would do Stuntmutt anytime, anywhere) but mostly it was just making fun of Schooly or Konrad or just telling stories about whatever. After a few more hours it was just me, Schooly, hellmitre, and Jilly left awake and we went outside to watch the sun rise, then hung out on the porch and continued to talk. Presently people started waking up and we came in and after a little bit hellmitre and I packed up our stuff, said goodbye and drove home.

All in all, as always, it was a great, great time. And as always it wasn’t even the halo playing that made it like that. Much cooler was getting to put faces to all these names we see on our screens all the time and to get to know all these people much better. Of course, huge thanks to Claude for offering up his house, and to everybody who came and made it awesome.

And oh yeah, what’s happened since is I got into a huge car accident on the way home from dropping hellmitre at the airport... some douchebag merged into me and sent my car flipping down the center lane. I’m fine, just some cuts on my hands, but the car is totaled. It wasn’t much fun. On the bright side, however, I got into college today. I’ll be going to the Savannah College of Art and Design next year. Which is awesome. But yeah, I’m alive and I had a great time at the house of Louis Wu. Life is good.

Pics and possibly more write-ups will be online soon, and I'll have the video of my 1v1 with schooly online eventually.

Again, huge thanks to Claude for another awesome time.
