Floating panels

In Response To: Re: Update at Bad Cyborg, mostly TB fun (Owm)

: About that floating panel: that's actually how the lighting works. Whenever
: you see a light on a wall and there's no obvious source, it's one of these
: panels. Usually you can't get close enough to the wall to get between it
: and the panel, but there are a few places. Here's a vid (second link,
: 600kb) from the Christmas contest a few years back.

Thanks. I downloaded the vid (woo-hoo, a movie small enough to download over my snail-like connection - what a novelty), but unfortunately couldn't view it due to lacking the right decompressor. Bah! Foiled again!

When you say "that's actually how the lighting works", what do you mean exactly? These particular panels don't look like they're responsible for light creation. They're several feet away from the light source, and it's not clear to me why they're there (whether by accident or design).
