: Here they are again. No login etc., is necessary, so it should work.

: If those don't work, then just try going straight to gearheadsofwar.com . and
: look for the blog entry, which is probably still top of the blog.

: One other thing I forgot to mention, papi blez, the author, discusses
: possible inspiration for the game (his childhood upbringing) and that is
: also interesting, and quite personal.

: I hope you can view it, Sep7imus. You were definitely top of my list to share
: it with.

The links work now!

I've played Gears and I think that in some ways he's right on in his assessment of it and in others he's a bit over the top in his love.

It does not have a compelling story (which he acknowledges), and the problem with the story is not just that not much happens plot-wise (unlike Halo), but also that what DOES happen is largely unexplained or clearly just tacked on to allow the story to continue ("plant this device to map the tunnels" - "okay" - fight, fight, fight, plant device, run like hell - "oh, the device didn't work" - "well, hey, here's another device just lying around (WTF?) let's go plant THAT device!"). Similarly, his love of the final boss (General RAAM) seems contrived as well - there are LOTS of games where you get a glimpse of the final boss early on but can't do anything at the time.

But, the gameplay and the graphics are phenomenal. Despite the uncompelling story, this is the first (only? - well, in a long time at least - like since "Bard's Tale" and "Might & Magic") game I've played all the way through. It's just a lot of fun.

Comparisons to Star Wars? Yeah, I guess I can see it - but just like every other video game out there, really, it involves a lot of action, not a whole lot of plot or character development, and builds up to blowing something up at the end.

Oldies, but goodies.
