Twin bridges megabattle
Posted By: RocksliderDate: 11/16/06 9:03 a.m.

If you love hectic battling and glorious scenes of carnage, here's something that should rock your cyborg world. Bad Cyborg presents a fourth megabattle in H1, and it's the biggest ding-dong yet. The twin bridges megabattle takes place in the snowfield beneath the twin bridges in AOTCR. You can get up to 87 enemies there, and up to 18 Marines!

The battle is set up by progressing a spiral path megabattle situation. The idea is to get all the enemy heading down the spiral path to the underpass and tempt them through to the twin bridges area, to join enemies triggered there. After that, you can head on through in a Banshee to get a battle start checkpoint, convenient for replaying the battle again and again. Marines can be ready and waiting in a remote part of the battlefield, initially cooped up in a pen you built to keep them there. When you land, a horde of enemy charges your way, and pretty soon all hell is breaking loose.

I've actually known about this battle since January, but it's only recently that I've got around to exploring the whole thing in depth and getting Marines into it, which really brings it alive. You'll find all the details at the site along with some battle plans to try, including a fiendish Platform ambush that should really give the covies a bad day.

Big-squad battling

Without a doubt, battling alongside a large squad is the highlight of this megabattle, and for me it's a major highlight of the game itself. The close-quarter combat is simply fantastic and the scenes of carnage and mayhem are like nothing I've seen before. The spiral path megabattle was hectic enough, but this takes things to a whole new level, thanks in no small measure to the wide open spaces that let the enemy and Marines move around so freely, and that give you so much potential for setting up different encounters.

Part of the difference is that in large numbers, standard (non-sniper) Marines become surprisingly effective. Their individually feeble efforts mount up to quite a hail of fire, which I think causes enemies to spend more time dodging around and getting flustered, thereby reducing the amount of return fire. It's very much a case of the whole being more than the sum of its parts. On Heroic, a squad of four standard Marines contributes little more than atmosphere and distraction, and you'd barely trust them to take care of a Grunt with a paper bag stuck on his head. Yet a squad of eight is actually a force to be reckoned with, and by the time you get to twelve, things are really cooking! It's a radically different battle experience from normal.

I've been fighting alongside ten to sixteen bozos lately, and the combat has been truly stunning. Just listen to what some of the boys had to say after my Xbox controller cooled down:

Mendoza: "Man, that was some covie banquet. I lost count how many dirtbags I fried."

Jenkins: "Woo-hoo! One-zip to the humans!"

Fisher: "Damn but this is one helluva fun snow resort. Can we come again next year Sarge?"

Maloney: "Hold on a minute, I just fired off a couple hundred needles and the dang thing's still got lots o' whacky pink ammo left! Somethin' screwy here..."

Padowski: "Hey, who needs gloves to keep your hands warm when you've got a toasty plasma rifle like this? Those ugly suckers just kept on comin'!"

Sergeant Johnson: "Uhh! Bitch!"

Well put Sarge, I think that sums it up nicely.
