Literal meaning of Sangheili | |

I think I've got the etymology for the name 'Sangheili' 'Sang' is the French word for 'Blood', something I got out of the Da Vinci Code and confirmed on teh internetz. ( Tartarus' hammer is the "Fist of Rukt", 'Rukt' being the Hindi word/Sanskrit uninflected word-stem for blood. The Covenant are pretty bloodthirsty, for sure.) 'Heili' is a hard one. It might be a shortened form of 'Heiligen', the German word for 'Holy'. More likely is what I found in the Icelandic wikipedia article on 'Heili'. 'Heili' means 'brain'. http://is.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heili Sangheili=Sang(French)+Heili(Icelandic)= "Blood Brain" 'Blood brain' is a very fitting name for the exceptionally violent and militaristic Elite race, don't you think? |
