I don't think it can really be put down to armour. See the big hi-res pic for a reference. Even that its more detailed doesn't explain everything.

Just the first thing I'm going to point out as a starting block, look at the feet. They're almost flat, the hoofs as we know them simply aren't there. The 'toes' especially are almost completely flat and shaped more like a human foot.
I think that's one of the subtle things that makes them look totally different.
Features of the actual build have been altered, that's my concern.
