Ghosts of Onyx speculation

Nylund said that it would tie up a lot of loose ends--I take this to mean that Halsey, Kelley, Linda, Fred, Will, and possibly the three "Missing SPARTANs" will make appearances. The cover does nothing to confirm nor deny these suspicions; there are three SPARTANs, no more than the minimum number of survivors.

Studdying the cover, it seems as though the SPARTAN closest to the viewer and the one with the odd armour have a new sort of rifle. I can easily see it as being the artist's interpretation of the Battle Rifle, but I can also easily see it as being a completely new weapon.

My conjecture on the odd armour is that it's the Mark IV system, the unshielded variant used for the first twenty-seven years of conflict up until the Battle of Reach. Alternatively, it could be a variant of any of the three battlefield MJOLNIR types with prototype components.

I think that Onyx, perhaps, is the world to which Doctor Halsey departed with Kelley near the conclusion of First Strike, and that whatever secret operation that was mentioned on the tentative back-cover is Ackerson's project. I still don't think the S-III Halsey found stands for SPARTAN-III; I tend toward "Section III" because that's the division Ackerson and Halsey were working in. Will, Fred, and Linda could have been sent to Onyx after arriving on Earth by another O.N.I. member.

If those three don't make an appearance on Onyx(assuming that Onyx is, indeed, Halsey's destination), then I'm expecting that their stories will at least be either tied up or set up for Halo 3.
