Combat Question

Ok another stupid question..... When you are in combat, say for instance 6 marines and you VS 2 Elites If you let the marines and elites fight each other, i presume that they will continue fighting until everyone is dead, even tho you just stood by and watched it all, I guess what I'm trying to ask is the AI scripted events,like a certain marine will die in the exact place and time or is it random each time you start a level over? If the AI is random will the game progress even tho you decide not to kill anyone and let the marines do everything. It seems to me that most of the movies showed just the player killing everyone.
