Vector Chief Q&A

In Response To: Ladies and Gentlemen... the Vector Chief (DMDyet) I got a few interesting questions about the Vector Chief and the process that went into making it that I've decided would be cool to shed light on. Q: What program did you use to make it? A: Only Photoshop CS2 and my bare hands. No vector program was used. Q: What tools did you use to make it? A: Mostly my Logitech G5 Gaming Mouse, which is great for graphic designing due to the weights in it. However, for touching up and erasing I used my WACOM CTE-640 tablet. Q: What is your PC like? A: Decent. It's not the gaming rig I'd love it to be, but it's powerful enough to run Oblivion in medium quality. Q: Do you use a Flatscreen Monitor? A: No. Problem with flatscreens is that because the hardware is so compact, some ammount of image quality had to be sacrificed. My monitor is a giant, bulky thing. An LG Flatron ez. It's like normal monitors, but the screen is flat, it doesn't have an annoying curved screen. Q: You are actually an Australian? A: West Australian to be exact. Q: What are you doing next? A: Work on Vector Arbiter has already begun, and I am already experimenting with a few new ideas. There were a lot of things not asked that I'd like to shed light on though. Consider these some fun facts. -The whole Vector Chief image is made up of 55 layers contained in 4 sub-folders named "Color", "Light", "Dark" and "Scarring". -Only 3 of those 55 layers are not seen in the final image. -The actual high-definition layers-and-all Photoshop document is 12.1mb in size. -The Halo 3 logo in the bottom left was actually a vector itself, because I didn't want to lose quality simply sizing down a screenshot and cutting it out. -I cheated with the mud. The Master Chiefs boots are actually colored green and black, normally, beneath a transparent brown layer-the mud layer. You can see an example of this here: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/34945312/ -The Vector Chief himself is only actually made up of 40 colors. I used every single color on my palette. -In the shot of the Master Chief I used, the rifle he is carrying is not resting on his shoulder, but actually clipping THROUGH his armor, hence the strange way his right shoulder looks in the image. -The most difficult thing to do was the mud, as I had to make a decision on how much detail I wanted to go into it without screwing up the shape of his legs.
