That'd be true if they were static objects built under compression, like pillars or chimneys. Space elevators, however, are built under tension. They don't collapse, they snap, like cable-stayed structures; the failure mode of the tether being broken near the ground is to have the structure pull up, casting debris in its wake. Google rawks; MIT has animations of space tethers breaking though they're a touch large-scale... the specific case we're talking about is this one, a snap near the anchor. I could see some of the debris being flung westerly from the release of tension, though that's a gut feeling. -- Steve probably shouldn't trust his gut with energies on this scale. (Can anybody guess how loud the snap would be?) | |
