Seven Basic Plots | |

In Response To: What if? (Sir Xander) There's a theory that there are only a limited number of plots for stories in the world. I thought it was 5, and spent a few minutes searching for the details. Anyway, it turns out there are seven! (according to Christopher Booker anyway). Maybe it's not so surprising that there's a "coincidental" aspect to the Halo story and the bible - after all, if there are only 7 basic types the story must be in a book that size more than once. And what better way to create a classic story than to use a few classic names and some solid persistent themes (I'm still looking for a sword called Mephistopheles...) As for the coincidence of details and references, well I guess that's possible, but I reckon design is more likley. Having seen the interest provoked by the Marathon story surely Bungie must have thought of creating a story that had all the hooks and interest to give Halo a long and interesting life way beyond the game. I for one have been visiting HBO for years, almost daily, but rarely posting, and the thing that really keeps me returning is the constant discussion and speculation about the back-story. I won't always read all of the forum, but I'll always look to see if the story page is updated. If it really is coincidence then Bungie must be having a good laugh at the depths we go to in our deliberations. That's seriously funny which ever way it turns out. |
