Have you ever seen Banshees go squash-crazy or chase after a grenade like a dog after a stick? You soon will when you lead them into areas outside the valley in the latter part of Halo's level 2. By letting them chase your Warthog, you can lead them into any of the three survivor areas, the interior waterfall area, or down the underground tunnel all the way back to the light-bridge area. They seem to lose their normal attacking style. They tend to stay at ground level and skim along trying to squash you; and they'll push your Warthog around if you're in it. Throw a grenade and they go chasing after it for a closer look! Not a good idea.
Read all about this weird behaviour and the fun you can have with it, in Mad Banshees, the latest chunk of level 2 fun at Bad Cyborg.
I'm at a loss to explain these behaviours (which can also be seen in level 5 if you lead a Banshee to the underground bridge area) and I find the grenade-chasing thing especially baffling. Any ideas?
I bumped into all this weirdness when developing the Banshee battle engineering I posted about recently. In that piece you'll find two changes, now that I've posted about the weirdness. The section 'Off the beaten track' has been expanded, and there's an extra paragraph in the bit where I describe battling inside the underground tunnel.
