Narcogen's Great Journey write-up
Posted By: Peptuck <peptuck3@hotmail.com>Date: 3/5/06 10:21 p.m.

Narc, you did a pretty good job with this thing. i definitely liked how you pointed out the various AI behaviors in regards to the enemy you're fighting. However,t here was one paragraph I noted:

With no Cortana to give you clues about what's going on, you don't even realize that you're on the trail of Tartarus, Commander Keyes, and Sergeant Johnson until you emerge onto the access platform for the Scarab.

It's also unclear exactly what they're doing there anyway. Tartarus left High Charity with three Phantoms and the Index on his way to the Control Room. Instead of going directly there, he apparently lands nearby, only to be ambushed by the Arbiter, who rescues Johnson. Tartarus retains Keyes, the Index, and apparently Guilty Spark, who isn't seen at this point but is in his possession in the Control Room when you make it there. So after taking the tactically prudent move of splitting up his three charges into separate vehicles when leaving High Charity, Tartarus makes the error of placing them all at the same place in the same time and losing one of his captives.

Also, despite the fact that only a few seconds have passed, you're unable to catch up with Tartarus' phantom en route to the control room. The Arbiter tells Johnson that Tartarus has "locked himself inside" but it's unclear how he knows this, or how Tartarus could have reached it so quickly.

That's because Tartarus never landed on the Scarab platform. When you see him in the cutscene at the end of Uprising, he lands directly in the control room with Miranda and Spark, while Johnson and his Marines are dropped off where the Scarab is docked.

Also (and I fully expected you to mention this, too :P)

Tartarus, on the other hand, is a boss battle. He can't be damaged except after his shield is dropped by Johnson's beam rifle. Why he has a shield when no other Brute has one? No idea. Why is his shield better than any Elite's shield, such that it is unvulnerable except to this one weapon? No idea. What's special about Johnson's weapon that it works against Tartarus' shield, where a supposedly identical beam rifle in your own hands is completely ineffectual? No idea.

The reason why Tartarus' shield is unique to him is painfully obvious when you remember what the Covenant is: an ignorant caste-based theocratic religious system.

Why doesn't anyone else have Tartarus' shield? Because he's the Brute Chieftian and wields the Fist of Rukt. No one else rates it, because they aren't the Chieftian.

As far as the Covenant care, that's all the reason he needs to have the shield and weapon be exclusive to him.

I've also noticed that the beam rifle does work on Tartarus if you use one yourself. Heck, even another Elite wielding one can knock out Tartarus' shields. I did this one time when I got Spec Ops into the Control Room and gave him a beam rifle. He and Johnson were plugging away at Tartarus and constantly dropping his shields. So, apparently, there's nothing special about Johnson's rifle.
