Covenant / Oriental minor similarities
Posted By: Walshicus <mw703@soton.ac.uk>Date: 2/15/06 4:32 p.m.

I've been doing a lot of research for my dissertation of late, which is what you'd expect of a student really. The subject of the paper [and 10,000 words is a quite lot of paper...] is 'The evolution of Chinese foreign policy over the last three hundred years', and as such I've had my nose stuck in to a variety of old texts, trying to use my rudimentary Mandarin skills to mine for facts.

Now, Chinese emperors would typically change their names upon ascension to the throne, and new date eras would be declared soon after. Thus, the man born Yinzhen became Yongzheng who founded the era of Harmonious Justice, and Hongli became Qianlong of the era of Heavenly Opulence. Now, the Covenant naming scheme employed by the Prophets struck me as very similar - I doubt Truth was born to that name, for instance... so perhaps it might be worthwhile for people to look to Chinese history and mythology as we've done in the past for Norse and Christian mythologies. I suppose it's not quite as accessible as those two, but as I say it's worth a try.
