Phantom Snipers on Backwash (HOLY SHIT)
Posted By: Exiled ZealotDate: 8/31/05 3:47 a.m.

Jesus H. Christ...have any of you played Metal Gear Solid 3 and fought a boss called The End on a hard setting? THEN you definitely know what I'm talking about.

Some guy got mad at me for making rebuttals to his smack talk on big team battle, and getting more headshots than he got kills on top of that. So he wants to face me head to head in battle to prove his worth (and for the record, he was the ultimate trash talking n00b). But I got to decide the match. It took a bit of persuasion (nicest way I could put it), but I convinced him to do a game of Hide & Seek, in a manner of speaking...Phantom Snipers on Backwash. No grenades. No motion sensor. Only your eyes, and maybe your hearing. The objective for him was simple...find me and kill me in 5 minutes. I would hide on the ground I confirmed to him, and not some cheap ass place above the level.

Although there was no time limit, I was keeping track with a timer on my computer, and sounded off to him how many minutes are left. I would annouce when I see him ONLY ONCE. After that, it was up to him to remember the location of where I saw him, and work with that. I did announce it, and he stopped, and he looked around everywhere on the ground. He could not find me. And when I was sounding off the last 10 seconds, he happened to be in my field of vision, and when my voice said zero, I shot him in the head with my sniper rifle (and it was a lucky shot too) just to get my point across.

Lesson learned? Well it really had nothing to do with how he was behaving in the game, but it gave him something new to look at. There's more to Halo than immediate one-on-one skill with accuracy, headshots, etc. There's the environment in which you battle in. Know the environment, and your chances of survival go WAY up. The game I played with him was an extreme case. As it turns out, he actually said the game was awesome, and he would try it out with a couple of his friends.

As for the hiding place? Well, it was on the ground, and I never moved from my location. But there are certain locations where the distortions of the surrounding environment blend in all too well with your stealth camoflauge. Backwash is like that of course, but I did not use the mist as a backdrop for the optical illusion, I used an area surrounded by trees that could only be viewed effectively at one angle, and even at that angle, he could not see me...
