HBO LAN through the eyes of a goat
Posted By: goatrope <mongofooter@hotmail.com>Date: 4/4/05 5:03 a.m.

In Response To: Uhh, I'm home. [RES] *IMGs* (nukedude)

Note: This was written over the course of today, so bits and pieces might not fit together. Meh. Oh, and this was my first HBO lan, so some of this may be redundant for those who have read piles of these things before.

---------------------------------------------------------

So I’m sitting here in Bradley Airport with 2 hours until my flight even boards, so I might as well start this writeup now.

Day 1

Whew. Thursday morning, I’m up at 6am PST. Shower, eat, get dressed, finish packing, out the door at 7am. Three hour drive from Vancouver (where I live) down across the border to Sea-Tac, the airport in Seattle. Check in, go through security, sit around for 3 hours. Hop on the plane, sit around flying for 5 hours. Hour layover, number of complications leading to an extra hour delay, then an hour flight into Bradley, where KP picks me up and we cruise back to his house, stopping only for a quick meal, finally arrive at his house at around midnight EST. That’s fifteen hours of straight travel. Whew indeed. Oh, and KP said that I have to mention the fact that I suck at eating burgers. I suck at eating burgers.

So KP and I chill in his office yelling at people on IRC, play some rather hilarious cooperative Halo 1 Legendary (which happened to contradict the whole “cooperating” idea), then some H2 XBL, then we realize that it’s 5am and we’re supposed to pick up El Bastard at 10. KP went back to his bed and I to this nice little guest room (in which I hit my head on the ceiling a number of times).

Day 2

KP knocks on my door at some hour that I would guess was around 9 or 9:30 (I didn’t have a clock), I get dressed and we head out to grab El B (Tom) from the airport. KP pulled the car into the little “No parking – Active unloading/loading only – You will be towed etc” area and asks if I’ve got my license on me. I tell him yes, he hands the keys over, says “go park somewhere if you get talked to” and gets out. Then I have all sorts of pictures in my head of me trying to find the parking lot and ending up on the highway, getting lost and crashing and dieing or something. Anyways, nobody seemed to notice/care that the car was sitting there, KP returned with Tom soon after and we headed over to Claude/Louis Wu’s house (gasp).

We pulled up to the house and parked in front of the garage, and Claude opened the garage door and greeted us. Stepping inside was just astounding. All over the basement, there’s random Bungie memorabilia. Posters, books, a Nightmare Armor helmet, games, you name it. Then there’s his office, the nerd’s paradise. Something like 4 computers, 6 monitors, a TV with an Xbox, mini-fridge and even an attached bathroom. Add a bed and you could live in there for weeks on end. So we chilled there for a while and talked about Halo, Bungie, airplanes, and a whack of other stuff I can’t quite recall, then we popped in Halo 2 and had some fun little 2 or 3 man games (some of which were with Claude’s kids).

KP and I still had a few more things that needed doing, so we drove back to the Chateau KP, picked up various LAN supplies (Xbox, games, controllers, laptop, etc), then headed back to the airport to pick up Ma1agate and Gomez (who I think are cousins) and cruised back to Claude’s. More chilling and a couple of 2-box system link games ensued. Over the course of the rest of the night a number of more people showed up (including Cody Miller! :o) and more LAN games were played. The game I recall best was a Beaver Creek no shields shotgun CTF. Favourite moment: My team’s at 4, we need 1 more to win. I sneak into the base all Sam Fisher style, wait for it to empty and grab the flag. I start to run out, see some radar blips (I think) in the tunnels below and for some reason ran out the front door. I hung right on my way back and surprisingly, I didn’t encounter any real resistance until I had just passed the creek and was coming around a rock. I see two little blips on my radar, “Uhoh.” I go for the gusto, dive out, and am met face to face with an enemy who actually had OUR flag. *Smack* he’s down. I see the guy who was no more than 2 feet behind him fire a shot straight at my face, somehow survived, and bashed his face in with his own flag. Our flag returns and I come home for the win. There aren’t many things more satisfying than hearing the “AH! GOAT!!” from the other room as you get a double kill with the flag to win a game. :)

It begins to get pretty late, and since the official LAN date was the next day, we decided to turn in at a reasonable hour in order to be awake for as much time as possible the following day. Claude managed to get a bed/couch/somewhere comfortable to sleep for the night for everybody; I was in a room with Cody and Tom. A few minutes go by, and I hear a “snnnrrghh” from the other side of the room. Long story short: Tom started to saw some serious logs, and after several futile attempts to wake him up in hopes to stop the snoring, Cody and I moved our stuff to another room and caught a decent night’s sleep.

Day 3

I woke up, slapped on some deo and stumbled downstairs. Grabbed a bagel and an iced tea and I perked up a bit. Over the next few hours the majority of the people showed up, including some people that I had hung out with on IRC and the forum for a long time (nof, retsamolah, konrad, whoknew and others I’m forgetting). A few people brought in some absolutely AWESOME projector screens (I’d never played on one before :)) and their Xboxes/games/controllers and stuff. Cue massive LAN games. Around noonish (I assume; I didn’t have a clock, again) we had lunch, consisting of two of those gigantic Subway subs, and other miscellaneous sandwich type foods. After lunch we played a whole bunch more Halo (both 1 and 2).

Then came the time to order pizza for dinner, and we laid a little surprise on Claude. We were all standing in the kitchen, and he was standing around talking about what pizzas they usually order or something (I wasn’t really listening, because I knew what was coming), then Miguel just stepped forward and told him (playfully) to shut up. He then brought out a present that was from the HBO community as a whole; an original, one of a kind, authentic, frame Craig Mullins print. I don’t have a link to a picture of the picture off hand, but they’ll start popping up soon (probably even before I get a chance to post this. We played for a bit longer, then the pizza arrived. We all hung out in the kitchen eating pizza and had a really good discussion about Halo, Halo 2 and their differences. After a while we fell back to our Xboxes and played even more Halo. Cody Miller (speed run master) and I found an empty box and sat down for some Legendary co-op and had some great fun. Over the course of the night we beat Cairo, Outskirts, Metro, Arbiter and Oracle, then after that we went back and played some more multiplayer. People started watching some Star Wars things, so I hit the hay around 3:30am.

Day 4

The final day was pretty relaxing. Just sitting around, hanging out; I didn’t end up playing much Halo. People started to leave, and by about noon or something, El Bastard, Tirion and I were the only ones left. Claude drove us to the train station where we dropped off Tirion, then we headed for the airport where El B and I would part ways. The drive took a significant amount of time, so we chatted away about HBO, HIH, HSH and Canada. Claude dropped us off at the airport, said goodbye, we thanked him, then me and El B headed inside. We both checked in, got our boarding passes and went hunting for a place to grab some grub. Ended up in the airport Sheraton’s restaurant place, and the food was good. El B left for his flight, and I had to sit around for 2 hours, so I started writing this. Plane rides home were uneventful, and here I am now, at 3am typing up my LAN memories when I’m supposed to be at school in 5 hours. Hoorah.

Some more things I feel like saying

I’d like to say hueg thanks to KP for driving me to and from everywhere, feeding me and giving me a place to sleep. Thanks too to Claude for putting the whole thing on, and the immense amount of work involved in pulling that off. And no, I don’t have any photos or anything, so hopefully more people will post ‘em.
