Yes, this is an undocumented feature. Maybe you're the first to mention it?
I put a little dot that appears in the center of headshot-able weapon reticules when you get a bead on the head. The boldness happens when you pass over a weak spot like, say, the exposed back of a hunter. Most people don't notice this much because there are no weak spots in multiplayer.
