Ok, lately I've seen a lot of new faces around here. I like that. But, I've seen a lot of things that have bugged me. I'm not saying you can't do some things; I'm just giving some suggestions to those newbies to the forum.
So without further a do, I present my guide to start posting.
Ok, so you've stumbled upon Halo.Bungie.Org and saw a whole bunch of videos. You want to know how what was done in the video, and you realize that there is a forum on the site. You decide to ask how they did that. Before you do that, I would like to point out that the person who made the video probably posted about it, so before you make a new topic, I would recommend posting your question there for the creator to read. By doing this, you could spare yourself the problem of being flamed.
So, the creator of the video couldn't help you, huh? Well, there is a fancy search button which will either let you search the current forum or the archived posts from the old forums. Searching the current forum will allow you to find all the tricks done in Halo 2, and the occasional Halo: Combat Evolved trick. By searching the archived posts, you will be able to find tricks done in Halo: Combat Evolved. Always search before you post a new trick or egg. If you post a trick or egg that you believe to be new and it isn't, prepared to be flamed.
I am guilty of this. Basically, a search abuser is some one who notices that searching is something that none does. He/She gets very caught up in trying to enforce it, so every post he/she makes is about the search. People do not take kindly to this. It is very annoying to both the posters and the administrators of the forum, so please don't. Bottom line is: Don't be a search abuser. Other good references for section one include:
2.0 SpammingSpam is bad and annoying. Spam means Stupid Pointless Annoying Message. You will almost definitely get flamed if you spam. Also, spamming shows your intelligence level. 2.1 GrammarPlease, please try to watch your grammar. People don't like reading a post that they can't understand. Use paragraphs instead of clumping all your sentences together, making it impossible to read with out causing some one to get a head ache. Capitalization is also something that you want to look out for. It is not absolutely necessary that you capitalize the first word in every sentence, but it makes you like smarter. There is also a bad part to capitalization. Please do not capitalize every letter in every word, or the first letter in every word. It looks better not to capitalize anything than to capitalize everything. 2.2 SpellingPlease, try to use correct spelling. It is understandable if your finger slips and you add or forget a letter, but just posting with complete disregard to the spelling of words makes you look like a four-year-old, and believe me, the posters will point this out. Please do not speak in leet, for not all of us can translate. This also makes you like really young. One example of leet speak is: 7h3 qu1ck br0wn f0x jumps 0v3r 7h3 1azy d0g. Very confusing. Too many numbers and letters mixed together. Also, if you don't know how a word is spelled, I recommend using some sort of word processor (Like Microsoft Word> to see the correct spelling of the word. 2.3 CursingI have seen an eruption of this in the recent days. Not every one appreciates it, but no one seems to care anymore. If you feel the absolute need to swear, please do so in moderation, or at least censor it. 2.4 PunctuationPlease use punctuation, and use it correctly. Don't make a post with 3,000 words and have only one period. Also, don't use a question mark where a period is needed. 3.0 Basic Posting"You are not your post count" Please remember this phrase. Do not post a random spur of posts in quick succesion of each other. There have been many instances on this forum of this happening. People get annoyed quickly when you post eight or nine random posts within ten minutes of each other. 3.1 Post LengthWhen posting, try to put some thought into your posts. Don't just post something that says "I like Master Chief!" Try saying "I Like Master Chief because he likes to kill the Covenant fools and gets to go to cool places. I wish I were him. Does any one else like Master Chief, or some one else?" Also, do not make your posts too long. They do get repetitive after so long, especially when you are literally saying the same thing over and over again. That is what repetitive means. Please, if you are starting a new topic, say something in the body. Don't just title it and post it. 3.2 Tagging Your PostsOk, if you feel the need to post something that is not Halo or HBO related, will you please tag it. Or if you post something that is more than page that is more than a page, mark it. Basic tags are:
3.3 FlamingIf you have noticed, I have used the word flaming a lot. Don't worry, no one is going to come to your house and light you on fire. Flaming is when some one insults you or makes fun of you. You do not want them to do this mainly because it means that they do not like you. Also, flaming is not appreciated. I know what you are saying, so don't ask it. Yes, people are aloud to flame to an extent, but it is still not appreciated for it turns away forum goers. 3.4 Reviving Dead ThreadsThe revival of a dead thread can be annoying. Unless it is still actively being posted in, do not post. If people aren't posting there anymore, it is because they no longer care. Do not go back a couple weeks and find a post you like and post in it. People find this annoying and do not always look kindly upon it. 3.5 ConversationsPlease realize that not all conversations aren’t meant for a message board. If you want to talk to some one directly, try to IM them or E-mail them. Posting back and forth about your day was, is boring to every one else and eats away at Louis' bandwidth. This falls under Spam. 3.6 Give Credit Where Credit is DueIf you find something on another site and want to post it here, do not say it is yours. Some one will eventually prove you wrong and you will be flamed. By not giving the true author credit, you are committing plagiarism. By taking credit for something you didn’t do is like saying "I found it, so it is mine." 3.7 Posts Directed at Specific PeopleThese are pointless. Please do not make a separate topic to get a single persons attention. Wait until they become active again and then reply to one of their posts, or better yet, E-mail them. Making a separate topic is annoying and should not happen. 4.0 Expect People to DisagreeNot every one will have the same opinion as you, so don't expect everyone to accept what you are saying. Other people have their right to their opinion, and you have no place in trying to change that. Please keep an open mind. Don't think that because you said it, it is immediately right. People will try to prove you wrong, and if they do, accept it. You are still entitled to your opinion, but don't force everyone to like it. 4.1 Taking Time to Read Other's PostsOk, this makes me mad a lot of the time. Some on will make a relatively long post, and for that fact alone some one will make a pointless post saying "It's too long!" and nothing more. This is annoying. Please try to read it, and if you don't want to, don't post.
