Alexis's Reluctant Thoughts on Halo 2 (*SP*)
Posted By: Alexis <phoenix155@mac.com>Date: 11/13/04 5:53 p.m.

Hey guys,

(Great to see the forum back--keep up the great work, Claude!)

The following are my thoughts about the story for Halo 2 and how Bungie went about telling that story. There will be both positive and negative criticism, so please, please, please keep your negative comments about me to yourself.

Halo 2's story was superb. I enjoyed the game thoroughly. The graphics are amazing, the gameplay is fun, the character development alone adds a huge amount. I loved playing from an Elite's perspective and the fact that MCPO John 117 sided with the Elites at the end. I thought it was incredible to be playing with the Hunters instead of against them. However, there are several things which are a bit irritating and I would like to address.

First, much of the story that I was expecting was simply missing entirely. After playing Halo 2, I have no idea why First Strike was even written, as nothing contained within that novel is alluded to within Halo 2, save for the destruction of Halo 04. There was an incredibly large amount of story detail that yearned to be included and expanded upon within Halo 2. The most interesting part I was hoping to see expanded was where in the heck did Dr. Halsey go with Kelly? What happened after the Gettysburg traveled to Earth? It's not even worth mentioning that there were other SPARTANS alive within the novel, as Joe Staten did address that one specific issue by saying there are discrepencies within the novel that are not within the game in order to make it playable (I guess). (Also, I had a very hard time hearing Cortana much of the time, so I missed much of the story from that perspective. Any chance subtitles can be put at the bottom the screen in the MC's and Arbiter's specific HUD colors as a sort of communication built into the armor?)

Second, who in the heck is Cassandra? I've never heard of her (unless my novel information is sketchy and I simply don't remember her). What is her relationship to John?

Third and finally, why in the heck would Bungie leave us hanging like they did at the end of the game? I was absolutely appalled that Bungie would do that to their fans! I remember specifically reading an the November 2002 issue of EGM that specifically stated that Halo 2 would bring "closure" to Halo's story and that Universe. Heck, I used to write that all the time in this forum, shooting down people who asked about a Halo 3 or Halo 4. (Of course, I could be wrong, I could have read that article wrong, adding in thoughts and idea that weren't there, but I doubt it.)

I guess the problem I see here is that I wasn't expecting a trilogy. Do I have a problem with the (very likely, in my humble opinion) fact that there will be a Halo 3 and yet another (amazing) trilogy from Bungie? Of course not--Bungie makes great games and I've been enjoying them since I was 11 or 12--but I am very, very afraid that Bungie may have made a mistake with the ending of Halo 2 and they very well may have lost some of their fans and those fans' support.

Thanks for reading as always. Administrators, if you think this is a good enough summary, please feel free to post a link to this on the front page. (If not, that's no problem either).
