Hunters Immune to the Flood? (from Art of Halo) | |

Today in a mad, hot consumer rush after completing Halo 2's campaign and trying out XBox Live, I picked up a few Halo items. (Yes, I broke down and bought the headset... after I give it a good workout this weekend, I'll see if I can write up a review. And the soundtrack is playing on my computer right now.) More relevant to this post, I picked up the (gorgeous!) Art of Halo book. Random chance while flipping through its pages showed me this quote from p50: "The Flood Infection utilises the organism's nervous system and calcium store to create forms it needs to reproduce and fight." Right afterwards I flipped to p33, on the design of the Hunter: "The massive Hunters are actually something of a mystery to human scientists. Consisting of a kind of colony of spineless worms, they assemble into ferocious and massive form." Serendipity rules. Why haven't we seen Flood combat forms based on Hunters? Perhaps because they don't have a central nervous system like vertebrates on Earth, and so can't have it hijacked the same way as ours, and their bodies don't contain calcium-rich bones to rearrange and consume. In other words, they don't taste right to the Flood, much as Sgt. Johnson claimed in the First Strike novel. Well, I can't see any obvious holes in the theory so I'm airing it out here. Pick it apart if you can, please! 'Cause, as much as I like this theory, I think it'd be cool to see a Flood-hunter. (But not to fight one... blech.) -- Steve's failing to resist making a joke about opening a big can of worms with this one. |
