Last night I went to a talk sponsored by Microsoft about the Xbox. They're very generous and provided tons of pizza for their guests. The talk was given by Brian Schmidtt, audio and media director for Xbox. Apparently, he and Marty go way back. Here's the info: xbox365 is on crack. He didn't put it in those words, but that was the just (sp?) of it. Anything you read there is probably false. The DVD drive will likely have a single laser, but they aren't sure yet. They aren't sure about video DVDs either. They're planning a cool CD player, with visual effects ala WinAmp, plus the ability to play with the audio. He wouldn't say whether or not it was going to support Dolby 5.1, but I got the impression it would, or at least something along those lines. They aren't sure if they're going to force developers to support widescreen, or make it optional. That demo reel is a lot more impressive on a big screen is hi-res. While the Xbox won't ship with a keyboard, there may be one at some point. There's an ethernet port right on the box. You won't have to buy an add-on like all the other consoles. While he didn't say it, I got the impression dial-up users are SOL. The audio processor does all kinds of cool things in hardware, including distorting sounds that are going through barriers and pitch-shifting. While the hard disk size may change down the road if they can't get a supplier for 8 GB anymore, it's very unlikely it will change before launch. It's unlikely Microsoft will allow Ao games, but he wouldn't rule it out completely. | |
