: Oxygen is also very flammable.
: Thats how fire stays burning, but I've never heard of a campfire destroying

The Fire Triangle

Fuel

Oxidizer

Heat

This was mandatory stuff for me in grade school, taught every year by the fire department in order to help with fire safety.

Fire needs ALL THREE to burn; remove one element and the triangle collapses (fire goes out). Fire extinguishers work by removing one or more of these elements; for instance, CO2 extinguishers remove oxidizer (by displacing the air with a non-oxidising chemical) and heat (it's an expanding gas, and cools VERY DAMNED WELL thank you) and so break the triangle in two places.

The ONLY exception is self-oxidising substances such as dynamite or gunpowder... for them, fuel and oxidiser are packaged together in one lump. That's why they're so dangerous around fires. However, methane is not such a substance, it's one carbon atom surrounded by four hydrogen atoms. No oxidiser.

The Gruntyworld will not go boom when you pull the trigger, simply because if it could it would have with the very first thunderstorm that came along.

-- Steve reminds you that only CHEMISTRY can prevent world fires.
