Actually, I was thinking about this and since I doubt Halo will be some Tribes-like jumping around game ... and certainly I imagine it will probably end up at a slower pace. I actually wonder what the guys (and girls) will do about human vs. human (or cyborg, or whatever) gameplay.

What happens when you hit a human (for lack of a better word - who knows what it will be) in the head with a sniper rifle. Brain splatter? Skull shattered? Head decapitated? After all, the physics are real down to the shadows and antennas on jeeps. Should the graphic content be equally realistic?

Side 1 says that by making it realistic, you not only keep a continuation of the physics model, but also, if kids are playing, then they can see that the results of shooting someone in the head is real, gory death. It's not Doom or Quake. And, to go along with that side, there is (I will hazard a guess ;) the mature (17+) rating on it for what it's worth. It's not the developers job to babysit the kids - the parents should know what their children are buying.

Side 2 says it IS a developer's responsibility (just as the critics of Hollywood say) to avoid especially gory, realistic gameplay. In fact, they would argue the more gore, the more it would lead kids to mimic the violence ... not that anyone under 17 is "supposed" to be playing it. After all, Side 1 kind of pictures an ideal world ... and we all know we don't live in one (the parenting, rating, etc.).

It's an awfully fine line to walk, and I don't know if it's been talked about here. Pretend it's human on human and you're the developer. You certainly have the personnel to make it realistic down to the exact angle of the bullet. What would you do?

Best Wishes,

Nathan
