Okay, I had to head out for a bit; I came back to a bunch of silly stuff. Most of it is ignorable... but there are a few myths I'd like to debunk. Myth: Louis Wu is a tyrant. Reality: this forum is run in a more hands-off manner than almost any forum out there on the net. If you get slapped down (temp- or perma-banned, posts deleted, reamed verbally), you almost certainly deserved it - and worse. I don't ban people until I feel they're simply never gonna learn. (I've made mistakes - and I've usually apologized for them, publicly.) Myth: All admin action on this forum is performed by Louis Wu. Reality: There are 5 (6? Dang, I can't remember any more) other people with admin privs here. They're all people I trust pretty deeply. I don't always agree with them... but we work together well enough that we're rarely butting heads. One thing that a LOT of people seem to miss: EVERY ADMIN POST I PUT UP HAS MY NAME ON IT. If you see an action by 'Admin' - it's not me. That doesn't mean I don't condone it, or approve of it - it simply means it wasn't me doing it. If I ban someone, or lock a thread, or tell someone to cool down... my name will be on the post. Period. Myth: You can fool the admins by changing the name you're posting from. Reality: Bans are IP-based; your name is irrelevant. If you're on a huge network (like AOL) that uses proxy servers to connect its users to the internet, we will have trouble banning you, because banning you means banning all OTHER AOL users. This means that once the trouble starts, we have to delete/lock posts left and right until you've been chased away; this leaves us very unhappy. (I've called the father of a trouble poster here; it's amazing how much information you can find on people on the internet. Never, EVER think you're anonymous... because you're not.) If you're NOT on a connection that uses proxy connections, banning your primary IP(s) is simple, and while you can get around it, the ban is more about showing you that you're acting inappropriately than it is about locking you out; ANYONE can get around an IP ban if they work at it hard enough. We can, however, make it more of a job; the hope is that you'll realize that causing trouble on a forum devoted to a game isn't worth the hassle. Look: This forum is here because we (the folks who run b.org) love Bungie, and Bungie's games. We're not out to make anyone angry, or throw eggs at your windows, or hang toilet paper from your trees... we just want to give people a place to come and talk about Halo. Sometimes, someone comes here wanting to be a PART of a community like that... but for whatever reason, simply can't seem to get along with the people already here. At times like this, we hope that your common sense kicks in, and rather than sit around trying to CONTINUE to make trouble, you go out and find a community where you DO fit in. Because isn't it more fun to hang around people who LIKE you? | |
