Re: I'll try -Long

In Response To: Can anyone make sense out of this? (Simpsons Rule)

I'm not much of a book reader, I tend to miss a few things. I really like it when someone brings up stuff like this that I missed.

: Fall of Reach, page 234 Cortana says "I have also, um...coordinated with
: UNSC's astrophysics department and discovered some interesting bits
: archived in their long-range observation databases. There is a black hole
: located approximately forty thousand light years from the Sigma Octanus
: System.

The distance of 40,000 years is important when combined with the -60,000 years age of the meteor impacts on Sigma Octanus Four.

: An extremely powerful pulse-laser transmission back-scattered the
: matter in the accretion disc-essentially trapped this signal as this
: matter accelerated toward the speed of light.

A pulse-laser is not a broadcast but a targeted signal. The normal intention of such a signal would be to keep the information private. However, whether on purpose or not, this signal hit the accretion disc (a bunch of matter trapped around the black hole). This caused some of the matter in the accretion disc to back scatter (scatter in the direction of the pulse but in a wider dispersal). The matter travelled at near the speed of light away from the black hole.

: From our perspective,
: according to special relativity, this essentially froze the residue of
: this information in the event horizon."

The reason that the UNSC scientists know what happened is because they found the signal in the event horizon or at least in residual around the event horizon.

: "I'll take your word for it," Dr. Halsey said.

: "This 'frozen signal' contains information that matches the sample from
: Sigma Octanus Four." Cortana sighed and her shoulders slumped.
: "Unfortunately, all my attempts at translating the code have
: failed...so far."

: Can anyone put what Cortana is saying in simple terms? I'm sure this is an
: important part of the book but I can't seem to fully understand what
: Cortana is talking about.

This passage isn't about the black hole. What Cortana is saying is that the rocks found on Sigma Octanus Four match the signal found at the black hole. Cortana thinks that the rocks came from the black hole and travelled at near the speed of light.

So the signal is 60,000 years (age of meteor impact) plus 40,000 years (time for rocks to travel at near the speed of light from the black hole to Sigma Octanus Four) equal 100,000 years (actually a little more than that since the rocks did not travel at the speed of light but less than that).

Combining this information with what we read in Halo: The Flood (sorry Shiska :) ), this could coincide with the time that the Flood went into hibernation because they had no more food. Which could in fact be the last time that Halo's superweapon was fired.

If this pulse-laser signal hit the accretion disc 100,000+ years ago and Halo was within a few thousand light years of the black hole then this could mean that Halo's superweapon is a pulse-laser that fires at a black hole (mnem found something a while back about blackholes and how they could release gamma radiation). What exactly could be the result of this?

Anyway, so if Halo's superweapon is a superpowerful pulse-laser that shoots at a black hole (come on black holes aren't hit by superpowerful pulse-lasers by accident), first, why would it contain navigation signals leading to Installation 04 like what was found in the rocks.

Second, what kind of resulting radiation could wipe out life? Finn (oops nevermind enjoy your time off), mnem, Louis, anyone help, this is way beyond me. It goes into Unruh Radiation and all sorts of stuff like that. Help! (P.S. if it is Unruh Radiation, this could explain the practice of glassing planets too... hehe).
