Will there be a strong connection between...

humans and the brutes? Other than the "planet of the apes" vibes people will get, it seems interesting that one of the member races of the covenant probably had the same biological ancestors as humans. They basically seem like what we would have evolved into under different circumstances or environment. They can use weapons and pilot Ghosts (proficiency could be in question; I don't think their AI was complete in the E3 demo*), and perhaps they're not as intelligent as other races, but they've still evolved to the point where they're capable of holding relgious beliefs, which is exactly what the covenant is based upon.

At any rate, a thinking, intelligent, sentient ape is what you would have expected primative apes to evolve into if you were another species looking at earth through a mircoscope, so to speak. They seem to have the patented "purple alien blood" so I suppose there may be more internal phsyiological differences than outward appearances would suggest.

Overall, this just gives me the feeling that whatever grudge the Covenant hold against humanity could go back a long, long way. It's been suggested that when Halo Installation 004 was last fired 101,217 years ago, samples of each race in the galaxy were housed on Halo. This is highly similar to Noah's ark, and I imagine it would have been necessary since no sentient life forms would have survived to evolve (and 100K years isn't enough for a full evolution of a species).

To speculate a bit, it seems possible that while these sentient races were held on Halo for their own protection, they could have crossed each other's paths. If a conflict among these races arose, would the Forerunner colonize them on planets that were not their point of original simply to keep them away from each other? (which seems to have worked until 2525) Could the Covenant's member races be able to recall what transpired on Halo while humanity's recollection faded into History for some reason? It almost seems possible to me that the Brutes could have been another sentient race from Earth that turned coats (or "switched teams," whatever you like to call it) because they agreed with the other races' stance on whatever conflict there may have been.

I think this is supported a bit more by the fact that the Covenant actually bother to occupy Earth rather than just "glassing" it. Could they be reclaiming the former turf of one of their member races? Could the original reclaimer (Marvin Mabuto I believe... I have NOT read the novels) have been a moderate sized Brute in MJOLINR armor? Guilty Spark certainly recognizes Master Chief as having the outward appearance of somone he's met before, even if it was quite some time ago.

Well, enough random thoughts for now. Slumber is calling...
