In Response To: errr.... Shishka? (RustedAngel) : Pardon me for being thick... but what issue is this exactly? bad spelling?
: -Confused in Rustyland Meh, I guess I've been pretty vague. Most people have been around long enough to hear me mention this once or twice. Back before the acquisition, before 95% of you even knew about Bungie, there was halo.bungie.com. At one point, it merely harbored a couple amazing screenshots. Then, at one point, the website was updated. Much like the HBO front page titles you all know in love, you got a different little message, in the form of transmissions between space craft everytime you reloaded the site. Here they are, as documented at the HSP: • CPV Reverence (DE H c-7)
You slave, toil, bleed and sweat for your food. And we shall eat it. • CPV Esteem (DE H c-10)
You will not know where we have struck until you have fallen. • CCS Truth and Reconciliation (DE H c-1)
What you have begun in anger you shall end in shame. • CCS Truth and Reconciliation (DE H c-1)
None will exist to say whether you were defeated by valor or cruelty. • CCS Sacred Promise (DE H c-3)
Our conviction is like an arrow already in flight. Your life will only last until it reaches you. • SCS Pillar of Autumn (?)
"... He says I came not to send Peace but a Sword ..." • CCS Truth and Reconciliation (DE H c-1)
You have brought nothing to this world, and we will ensure you bring nothing out. • CAR Contrition (DE H c-5)
Through war we will teach your heresy. Through battle we will teach your frailty. Through death we will teach your fate. • SCS Pillar of Autumn (?)
I have governed the unwilling. I have walked the edge of the Abyss. • CAR Penance (DE H c-4: OB)
You live without discipline and will die without honor. • CCS Purity of Spirit (DE H c-2: OB)
It is said remorse is the pain of sin. We feel no remorse. • SCS Pillar of Autumn (n13a)
"These are the tygers of wrath." • CCS Purity of Spirit (DE H c-2)
This world will be ruled in blood. • CCS Truth and Reconciliation (DE H c-1)
When no single human brick lies atop another, then will we be satisfied with your destruction. That was all we had to know about the Covenant. Fall of Reach teaches us of an obvious hierarchy, and of the fearsome power of the Covenant. In Halo, we actually see the Covenant fight. What do we know about the Covenant, though? Very little. We never actually experience "their side." I prefer it that way. I prefer the mystique, the open-ended story that lets the theorizers go crazy. I like looking at my enemy and wondering what they're thinking, not knowing. Dietz' book completely defeats that concept, letting you into the Covenant world by giving you the story of a "clever grunt." What the hell, I say! By the end of Marathon, you knew a lot about the Pfhor. This wasn't done by playing as a fighter, though. On the occasion you found a Pfhor terminal, the message was non-specific. Even the S'pht, who you fight along side with for two of the games. You learn of their spirit, of their broken pasts, but you don't get to read S'Buth's diary while he's not around, if you know what I mean. I feel that such a direct access into the Covenant is wrong. I would much have prefered learning about the Covenant by fighting them, and picking things up on the way, such as we had to do up until "The Flood." I don't want to be given the opportunity to develop pathos for a particular member of the Covenant. I don't want to be able to develop a pathos for anything having to do with the Covenant at all. Personally, if there is to be strife amongst the Covenant ranks, I want to have no idea. I want to come upon a large battle where suddenly different factions amongst the covenant are fighting amongst themselves, and take advantage of the confusion without knowing the cause. I then want to think about it later, and try to develop my own idea for what's going on, rather than have the idea developed for me. -S |
