How about this for Halo's weapon?

In Response To: Re: Previous Firing of Halo * sorta lm* (Shishka)

: The Trih Xeem (Early Supernova, for you newcomers to Bungie fandom) would be
: an effective way to end life, certainly. However, one problem: That'd be
: the permanent end of all life in the galaxy.

: Now, first off, keep in mind, if Earth's sun were to experience Supernova,
: then Earth would be a cinder long before the Sun finally nova'd and
: released it's energy. A supernova is a vicious, destructive thing that not
: only effects its own system, but the systems parsecs and parsecs away, its
: flow emenating like waves, bouncing off anything it contacts. To supernova
: every star in the galaxy would bring about extinction within the universe.
: Here's where I poke the hole in your theory: We know the Halos have been
: fired before, and it was within the age of earth.

: How then, would the planet continue to exist at all? Let alone life on it.

A planet can survive a supernova, but lets not discuss that. How about a weapon that projects a pulse that temporarily negates the gravity of a star, which causes it to go Nova.

Here is what I mean, which I believe is similar to what StarHammer does:

1) The Halo weapon, using technology similar to slip-space engine technology, fires a pulse at a target star.

2) The pulse attempts to negate or smooth out the star's gravity field (causing huge gravity and slip-space disruptions). For a few seconds it does this.

3) With the pull of gravity no longer keeping the star together, it begins to expand rapidly.

4) The pulse discipates and the star's gravity field returns.

5) With a enormous crash the star collapses again, and the huge shock wave compresses layers of hydrogen and helium that would not have begun fusion for billions of years far beyond the fusion limit. The star begins to burn hundreds of times as bright as normal, and together with the light it emitted a vast Electro Magnetic Pulse speeds out from its surface at nearly light speed. The EMP could burn out every ship that it envelopes.

6) The star, now hundreds of times brighter than normal, then begins to shed its outer layers in a attempt to dissipate the flood of energy. Following behind the light and the EM Pulse, a wave of plasma sweeps across the system at a leisurely 50 percent of light. It incinerates everything in its path, and begins broiling the planets as it passes by them.

7) In effect, the star has gone Nova!!

The planet and star remain intact except all life and things that survived the EM pulse in the system would be boiled/incenerated by the plasma. By shortening the time the gravity of the sun is negated by the pulse, the resulting explosion (Nova) could be made to release less energy but still have enough to kill off most life but not all life. Say Halo's pulse only negates the star's gravity for less than a second, for example.

What do you think?
