If it makes it any easier...

In Response To: Re: Problem with Cortana/Foe Hammer theory (Mark Simmons)

If it helps any in understanding what I'm getting at here, it's probably worth me saying that this is not something you should see as speculation, theory or assumption within the context of the game world.

Just step back out of the artificial etheric universe of Halo for a moment and see the Halo story for what it basically is; a pile of A4 paper with printing on it.

Now, taking it as just that and nothing more, look at it from the point of view of someone actually writing the script. What are they writing, how are they laying it out and how are they *wording* it?

That is what I am essentially getting at here. In the context of what is written, there is a logic anomaly in the dialogue I mentioned earlier for the character called Cortana. From a writing point of view and a story point of view that anomaly makes no sense, unless it is a scripting blunder *or* the writer intentionally meant to make Cortana's response questionable.

If you ignore the former (and that's to assume that Bungie are actually proof-reading what they've just written), you're left with the latter.

In the context of the story, I do believe that this is a specific plot device to leave an ambiguous loose end for future character development. From that point of view, it makes sense and is a pretty standard thing to do if you're going to be writing a sequel. If you tie up all your loose ends by the end of the story, your then got to create all brand new threads for the next section.

As it is, there are a huge number of loose ends in this story. I think that this particular one is just part of those.

As it is, if you look at this as 'Cortana misleading/lying to Foe Hammer', it doesn't directly mean that Cortana is 'bad'. It just means that she has some unknown agenda, and that could be good or bad. And that's what I find interesting about it. It's precisely that which allows for interesting further speculation *within* the game world itself after the fact.

By now, you're probably wondering why I didn't explain my thoughts in this much detail from the beginning. Well, the reason is two-fold.

One, not being a frequent visitor to this forum, I could have just been mentioning something that had already been covered a long time ago. If that was the case, I would just be wasting my time going into it in so much detail initially, only for someone to reply, 'that's been mentioned before'.

Two, my intention was not to seem patronising to anyone here 'by spelling out ev-ver-ry-thing' in simplistic terms.

Of course, I'm not suggesting that this is the case or has been necessary. What I did do, however, was make my original post too ambiguous and, therefore, the direction I was coming from was not as obvious as it should have been. And that's my fault.

Anyway, hopefully this clears a few things up and makes it a bit easier for everyone to see precisely what I was intending to point out in the first place.

Mark
